Best bet might be to check out Suncor or Sincrude and ask them about relocation. I know Transalta paid for my friends relocation expense up to a certain amount but that was from Calgary.

youngbuck in Edmonton, Alberta said: I am currently 19 years old when i was 16 i always wanted to be a pipefitter and join the union for the local 488. I welded quit a bit for my age in school and out of school. My dad is a welder in the local 488 and a couple of his friends are welders and pipefitters. So when i was in school i got registerd for pipefitter application and could not get a job at the time. so my dad gave me the direction of being a carpenter so i got registerd and worked so far for about a year and a half and going for first year in may. And so far i think its kinda boring for commercial work. But i do have an amazing name for myself and im a extremly hard worker and every company i have been with told me im good. But wanna know if i should go with pipefitting or just stick with carpentry?

I have journeyman tickets for both welding and pipefitting but I was apprenticing as a carpenter back in the early 80's. Great trade and I really wished I could of got my ticket but the recession back then seemed to hit building construction worse then I could of imagined. I know what you say about it being a bit boring sometimes but I think all trades have a bit of that. Although I really liked carpentry, I've found pipefitting to be the most interesting of the 3. However, this may depend a great deal on what part of the pipefitting industry your working at. I've only worked in one shop for the last 25 years doing bench fitting and some fab work on units with a couple exceptions so my opinion is based on that and it be great for others with different experiences to chime in. The 2 exceptions I mentioned was when I was sent out with a B-welder to do some revisions out in the field. We worked long hours and it was unreal how fast the time flew because there was so much to do and the customer wanted their units up and running as soon as possible. Not sure how important this is to you but definitely better money to be made as a pipefitter.

That is very correct, there. All those big companies have announced that they would be starting up their project on www.safebookindustrial.com and I was glad to hear that as a pipefitter. Suncor and Total will be working again on Voyageur and I am pleased to be part of it.

OMG you guys are beyond Negitive. Do you guys need to be Spoon fed a job are you realy that lazy to do some home work and make some phone calls? Because if you are you probly are not worth even hiring.
I have worked in Canada Twice as a Union Carpenter/Scaffolder. I did the homework and got the Training needed to go and it was well worth it. As has been stated Go to your Union meetings, Talk to your BA have Contact info for him to help him help you.
As I posted months ago in these forums I ran into someone from the Pipefitters union while I was working in Edmonton in 2008 and at that time they where doing everything they could to get Fitters up there from the states and no one would come.
Here is what I had to do as a Union Carpenter to get there. File all the paperwork with my Union then get a Fingerprint background check done on myself and submit it all to the union. Then once a job was open for me I was contacted by the union and the company that I was going to work for. The company filed all the paperwork that was needed from the Canadian government. Then before I got into Canada I had to get a Canadian work Visa. I drove up to Edmonton so I got the work visa at the boarder on my way into the country.
I wish you all luck on going up there to work. I would love to go back that is why I watch the fitters forum I know that when Fitters work so do Scaffolders.
All ask is plese be respectful of the people there and DON"T SCREW IT UP FOR OTHERS.

Well we up here as 488 members feel your pain! As all of us our brothers(some more than others) have seen a terrible recession in the last 2 years! 488 had all kinds of work on the books until the fall of 2009! Projects started getting cancelled one by one! Unfortunately our BM didn't convey any messages to your halls like they did all across Canada! They shipped all travel cards home and told them to wait for a call to come back! Most never received that call! We have had some work over the last 2 years but just enough to keep our members going! Kearl lake has seen quite a few travelers but mostly from other Canadian locals! As the price of oil has been rising so have the job opportunities! They r predicting that the next 3 years(once these jobs get going) will b the busiest we have ever seen! Thats a good thing for all of our brothers across north America! Look for jobs such as Fort Hills, Husky Sunrise, Northwest Upgrader, Suncor Voyager, Shell Meg, and Total Energy! This is just a quick list off the top of my head. Good references for all to look up though. With all these plants starting construction we also have huge module and fabrication facilities to man up as well! This also doesn't include regular maintenance and shutdowns of existing facilities! There will b lots of work in the new year and that's the truth from one brother to another! Union rates are $42.29 construction! Most jobs are now under a pla agreement and r 14 days in and 7 out with flights to pretty much anywhere u reside! Pay based on 6.5 straight time and 3.5 @:1.5x! It works out very well if u work a full year! I'm not sure what u need to do to get work up here but most of u have a computer so look up local 488 and chat with any of our ba's! Remember be patient cause some will be honest and others won't have a clue and string u along for the ride like the five year term! I hope this helps!

MERRY XMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR...... IF THERE'S WORK! LOL

im a 488 member. under the project labour agreements there is double time, after 10 hours a day and on weekends. however there are all kinds of intermixed scedules and it can get quite confusing. the pla's are on the 488 website or just google them, they're not hard to find. i met an american fitter working at scotford and he liked it up here but he said some of his buddies didnt want to travel allthe way up here to work well this is a gypsy trade we're in and you have to follow the money. so do your homework and get ready for the next boom.

We are going to have lots of work ,yes for a selected few .here in Newfoundland ,you have the east ,central and the west bottom of the barrel. So when we go to work the project is well under way .I don,t rely on any one .the last job I had through the union I called them during a pre shut at the refinery because a friend of mine went to work and he was laid off a week after me two years pryer to the shut and when I called my name never ever got on the list I would still be waiting .

I'm hoping to find work as a pipefitter in Canada, Alberta either on a 12 month work visa or permanent resident. I'm a 22 year old time served pipe fitter. I've worked on numerous pipe work systems with a variety of grade steels on fabrication and site installation . I'm looking at applying next year for the visas. Can anyone tell me if there would be a good chance of me finding work being a young English pipefitter? Would my age be a disadvantage? I currently have just under 6 years experience. I've heared that I would be required to take aditional exams for Red Seal etc...??

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi, I have been trying to get in the Canada Job for about 3 mounths now. In order to work in alberta you have to go threw the qualification certification program. To be able to pass the recarments you have to have proff of 6,500 work hours in Pipefitting and they check it througly. There is a $450.00 fee for this, but the imployer paid for mine. I am still waiting on that to go threw so I can shiped out.
