What is the best training for becoming a hirable press operator? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective press operator?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

The best training is to be a press helper for a couple years first. Listen to and watch the operator. I have never heard of or met anyone who is "certified" so dont waste your time with that. Printing press are all very similar, its just a matter of learning the buttons. Visit www.usapressmen.com

Best training is on the job training, listen and do what is asked of you...until you get "it" do it their way, then you can do it the way that is easiest and best for you to get quality work out. Their way is good for them and most but not always good for you, I am female been in the biz for 30 years, started at USGS, Reston, VA. working on 60" 5 color Harris printing maps

The best training I can suggest is this; if you can get a job operating a press, stick to it and get close to the older workers. That's where the training comes in at. Those are the one's that share experiences with you, if you willing to listen and maintain repect. You get experience by doing (operating a press. As you learn on the job, you may also get the opportunity to additional training via vocational training or otherwise. Training through a college or university, set's you up for managment positions in the field, and you've probably noticed that most manager's manage. They don't always know the ins and outs of the working class. If you meet one that does, it's rare indeed. Keep going forward, you'll grow as you go. The desire you feel in your belly will guide you; don't worry.
