How did you get your start doing printing press operator work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

I started in high school in graphic arts class, way back in the late 1960's. I started in the trade as a helper on a 4/color miller, thats where you do all the dirty work, but its also where you get all your knowledge from. I just left a job running a 6/color 40" with a aqueous coater on it. Medical reasons. Just be willing to get dirty and ask alot of questions of the pressman.

iagree with Gene you have to be willing to bust your butt. no question is too simple or stupid. repitition is your best teacher as long as you learn from your mistakes. be willing to start at the bottom. Even now I'm willing to start over after 18 yrs as an offset pressman to learn the digital age but like 18 yrs ago someone has to give you the opertunity to prove yourself. so to all who want a career in printing just try to stay on top of new and upcoming changes. GOOD LUCK

I've been in the printing industry for 23 years now. The last 5 to 7 years have been crushing for the industry. I've seen over 30 print shops close down in this area in the last few years. The one's that are still around are making cut backs.
We have the internet, smart phones, kindal e-books, e-mail, and home printers to thank for reduction of print shops.
Your best bet is to look outside of New York for printing work.
Good Luck!
