Getting a procurement specialist job.

How did you get your start doing procurement specialist work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

I have an interest in provurement Mgmt and having a difficult time breaking in. I have BS in Chemistry & a MBA. Additionally, I have done some purchasing on a very small scale.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

In regards to experience and education, I think it depends on where you live, and the competition in that area. I work in procurement in Alaska, my educational background is a B.A. major: history, minor: business, but had no prior work experience in this field. I would recommend if you have had little to no experience in this field but are interested, to look into federal, state, or city job openings. The pay might not be equal to private in some areas but the experience, training and opportunity could be greater.

I didn't have any pior experience in Procurment, but I have a strong customer service background -9yrs in the Direct Marketing industry. In my case the hiring manager (now my boss) was looking for people who were VERY customer service oriented.

I also have a BBA in Marketing.

Hope that helps some. If you can deal with people in general you should do ok in breaking in or getting that interview.
