Hello everyone.
I've tried looking on google but it's not really clear so I thought I would ask actual psychiatrists what needs to be done. So if you'd be so kind as to tell me EXACTLY what I would need from high school on it would make me a very happy guy :). |

Heyyy, I just graduated High School on July 31st 2008. Im only 16 but I'm really looking into the whole being a psychiatrist. I love helping people and everyone always comes to me whenever they need to. I'm not from Georgia, I'm from the Hagerstown, MD area. I just need to know a few things. Like, I've had a bad life concerning drugs & etc. but I'm over that stage and I want to do something with my life. Would my past ruin my chances of becoming a psychiatrist? I really hope not. This is my dream. Not to mention being a model but I've fulfilled that dream, just haven't gone far with it since I was in school. I decided to take a whole year off from school to help myself make a decision on what I want to be. I already made that decision. I'm going to look into my modeling career for the next few months or so but come fall of '09 I want to start college. I'll be looking into colleges' alot soon. I hope someone can give me advice. Please help!!! Thank you. |

Hi, i m currently a Junior at Punahou High School in Honolulu and i had one quick question. Like i know the requirements to become a psychiatrist or a psychologist, but i was wondering what is the success rate? Like what are my chances? i average a 3.4 gpa with biology, chemistry and physics completed. I will be taking an AP Biology class next year as well as an Anatomy class. Aloha |

To become a psychiatrist you need to go to a four year university and get your Pre-Med taken care of (1 year of calculus, 1-2 years of biology, 1 year of english, 1-2 years of chemistry and 1 year of physics). For most Medical School programs you will need an undergraduate degree in order to get in so I would recommend getting a B.S. in: biology, biochemistry or chemistry. It would be wise to pick up a minor in psychology as well. After you finish medical school you will need to get into a residency program in psychiatric medicine. this program is usually 4 years. After your residency you will become a psychiatrist. To Become a psychologist you will need to get your B.S. or B.A. in Psychology at a 4 year university. After you get your undergraduate you will go to a graduate school for a 4 year PH.D./Psy.D clinical psychology program. In this program you will earn a Masters of Counseling Degree. You will have to write about 3 dissertations which are 30-120 paged papers about research that you have conducted. |
