How did you get your start doing quality control technician work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

I got my start w/ temp agencies.
The 1st one sent me to a chemical co and I stayed there for about 2 months.
The 2nd one (2 different agencies)sent me to a food prep place and I have been here over 1 year.
The place I worked before and this place desire candidates w/ science related degrees or someone who is working toward a degree.
I have saw some positions online that do not require an official BA or BS though.

I started in at the bottom as a handpacker, and when there was a opeing in the Lab, my work record/attendance helped me, company gave me the training, which has been on going because procedures are always being up-dated. Knowing the computer is helpful, degree is not necessary unless you want to manage a department.

I have did quality for machining for over 10 years.
It's ok. Final inspection is the best in my opinion. Cleaner and quiet. I wanna take the next step to CMM but it is pretty tough to get the opportunity. I often had problems getting the tools I needed to do the job correctly. I may transition to CNC Machining

Quality control technicians test materials before, during, and after production to measure the characteristics of materials and ensure that they conform to specifications.

So if you want to be a quality technician like I am, then you have to first talk to people in that dept to find out exactly what they do. No matter what job you are performing currently.

Take the initiative to teach yourself spreadsheets, charts of before and after test, things like that. Do the extra work of showing on a spreadsheet what the product measures with each test performed.

So you might have 5 test on 1 product with 1 spreadsheet with 5 tabs and each tab will have it's own chart showing the test results.

Get good at this then show your testing results to the Quality supervisor. They love to talk about this analytical procedure.

You have to show results and initiative you have created to draw attention to yourself.
Let them know you are interested in Quality and keep showing them your skills.

Do not wait for someone to teach you, teach yourself with research.

Also they will consider you more if you would take ASQ Quality Technician training that is certified. It does not take long.
A 2 week class I thing and you may be able to do it online.

Hope I helped.
