The best opportunities are rarely publicised. I got my first position via a headhunter - admittedly most of them are useless and their approach rather annoying, but the one I worked with, placed me in 3 weeks and sorted out flights, accommodation for interviews etc. Best way of being noticed is to get on linkedin or to send a resume to a recommended headhunter so you are on their radar whenever they get retained mandates. Two I highly recommend are Jane Seymour (jane@seymoursearchpartners.com) and Richard McDonaldson (richard.Mcdonaldson@macroquant.com) with Jane being the one who placed me.
