OK I been looking on this forum and I see a lot of bad attitudes. They have a couple threads with this subject but I didnt find the answer I was looking for. I want people to answer this who love what they do and give me some straight answers. I have family members who are Rad Techs and they make a pretty damn good living and ever since I was young I always believed that's what I would do. But when I was a young kid I had asthma. It was one the worst cases in south Louisiana. The Hospital workers became like my second family I was in there so much. So I'm like torn because I have to love for Rad Techs cause it's like in the bloodline, but I feel like I can give back to people, especially ones with asthma by goin respiratory Care! Amazing feedback greatly appreciated! |

Be an x-ray tech. It's all rainbows, flowers, and sunshine. The world is at your feet. You'll find a job as soon as you graduate and you won't even have to move. You'll never have to work evenings, nights, weekends, or be on call. If you need a day off to handle some business your fellow employees will support you all the way and won't mind covering for you at all. The insurance is great and you'll double your salary within the first 5 years. If it were me I'd follow my passion of Resp Therapy. |

I've found that people who have a passion for something, as you have previously stated about resp therapy, should follow that passion. Because of your previous experience with resp therapy you probably know more about it than radiology. The job prospects for resp therapy are better than radiology. There are jobs out there for resp therapist because they, those who run the professional organization, have done a better job of protecting their profession than radiology. Because of healthcare reform there are going to continue to be cuts in radiology while the same is not true for resp therapy. Good luck in your career search.

That was always the route I thought I would take. They normally start out making more to than Rad techs right? I'm not in it for the money but I mean thats an extra bonus I must say. |

Resp Therapy techs and Radiology techs make essentially the same same salary. I believe they both start out at about the same salary. There is a lot less physical stress on your body as well. Very little lifting and moving of patients. |

Just wanted to say it's helping me make a decision, or at least get closer to making one. I'm done with pre-reqs for the rad tech program, I work in a imaging facility in various and sundry scheduling and med records duties, but the closer I get, the more afraid I am that there won't be any jobs or at least very few. My sister, an RN, suggested respiratory therapy and I initially balked at the idea, but the more I research it and think about it, it seems like it might not be a bad one. I need to do something soon, I have mouths to feed and I owe my wife about a three-year long vacation for all the hours she puts in. |

Rad tech here makes a few buck more than Resp Ther. Don't really know why, but us Resp Ther always thinks that's BS. All Rad Tech does is roll in a stupid machine and press a button and leave, us Resp Ther have to stay will a pt throughout their breathing tx's and managing the vents, that is very time consuming. When there's code blue who shows up? DR. RN and Resp Ther. Rad Tech only come with DR.'s orders stat x-rays. |

I think you should follow your own intuition. Any healthcare career for that matter won't be having any issues in coming years as baby boomers ages. What you have to consider is how much effort you want to put? I suoppose resp therapist is a bachelor degree so you might need more dedication and efforts. At the ned few bucks here and there in salary won't matter as what satisfaction of doing job brings it to you!
