Dear soon to be graduates, when you do your clinical rotations this is the best time to show them what you are made of. Do the best damn job you can. That means no skipping clinicals, no tardies and volunteer to do exams instead of being asked to. Get to know the lead technologist, bring some donuts in to share with the crew. You want these guys to remember YOU! Being polite is very important. Here at your clinicals you do have a foot in the door...and this may be your only chance in landing a job after graduating. This is how I received my first job a hundred years ago. |

There was a time when doing a good job was good enough, saddly those times are long gone. Always do the best you can, if your not the patient suffers, never be late or call out, if a volunteer is really needed you work with lazy people, jump on it. After two years if the lead tech doesn't know you, you either are a wall flower, they are apathetic, or you have too many students. Don't bring donuts, if they don't remember you for your excellence they will remember you for your ass kissing ability. Don't be polite in your clinicals, be polite in your life.... if its fake or part time people can tell. Saddly, if you don't land a job right after graduating at your clinical site, your foot is no longer in the door, heck it was just cut off at the neck. My first job was at a different hospital because my clinical site only hired 2 out of the 6 part time, my reputation got me a job at a better hospital, much to the dismay of their students. This field is over saturated, I used to recommend it to others, now I beg them to find something else. Radiology is awesome work if you can find it, if you get it be prepared to fight for your job. |

You said it well Dubsy! It is extremely cut throat out there between technologists. Things were very tense at my last job as everyone was trying to justify why they shouldn't be the next person to be laid off. BTW, If you are going to kiss up it is best to do it with the person who hires and fires and not the lead. |

If Nuclear Medicine Techs are not being hired because lack of experience, how will they hire IT professional in hospital,PACS administrator or Database Administrator without any experience? We all have to start somewhere. Can you find a position in IT after graduating with Master's degree? |

When I log onto my email I have to go threw MSN.com, they usually have some silly article that involves a top 10 doe/don'ts, most are about interviews. They all say the same basic vague things rehashed from last weeks article on the exact same things. Periodically there is a gem, this is an article about 6 figure jobs anybody can get, usually without any real schooling. Most such claims site Bill Gates and Chris Gardner, (he was played by Philly's own Will Smith in PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS). If you don't feel like reading the whole article scroll down to the bottom, number 7, enjoy and feel free to send your thoughts to the author:) |

There is a great need for IT people, especially in areas where technology is a large part of the economy. 2 of the 4 PACS people where I used to work were also hired right out of college. Both of them were former techs. BTW, I'm currently working on my Masters. My employer is footing the bill. Radiology and IT have little to nothing in common. That is sort of the point of the career change. |

That was a nice bit of comedy relief. |
