I was layed off 2 months ago after 10 yrs. of RT work. There are very few RT job openings. The field is super competative due to lack of jobs. I mostly find Activity jobs in nursing home for half what I was being paid.

I am having a lot of trouble finding a job in RT. I got a B.S. 4years ago in RT and I started out in the field part-time but it wasn't enough and I have been working in sales ever since, but lately I have tried getting back into the field and I cannot find anything that is paying much of anything.

I can relate to everyone. I was working as an RT in psych for oveer 8 years and was laid off and replaced by new people willing to take much less money. I wasn't even certified and now I see certified jobs that even pay less that what I was making. I feel like people think RT wasn't important and i loved my job. I worked in Psyh as well and people would look forward to my groups. Now it's replaced with techs they give some art supplies to and call in rec therapy. So frustrating!! Good luck to everyone and hang in there. I'm currently working in sales myself and making a lot more money just part time.

I graduated in 2005 and I still haven't found anything in RT. I have looked nationwide. I came in second with the prospects I did get.
I went back and earned my MEd in elementary education with the idea of becoming a child life specialist. I had one interview the month before I went back to school. I am graduating just as teaching jobs have dried up.

I notice that your post was quite a while back. Have you found anything yet, Kelli?

The field is drying up. Most good paying hospital jobs are gone. N.H. can hire an activities person for much less. We are caught between the O.T. and activities field.

I just found this forum - my undergrad is in RT and i've worked in gso, as well as northern virginia in the field. I saw a posting for an RT position at Forsyth Medical Center recently if you are looking for something local. Look under Novant Health. Good luck!!

I was laid off from the state of Tennessee as a recreational therapist 8 months ago because I was the last person in my department. I was the one of two people with actually have recreation therapy degrees and a very good worker while they keep people who was not good employees. Now I working a boring and depressing job for the state :(

Recreation jobs are hard to find especially since employers are willing to hire people outside the discipline in states where Recreation is not licensed. Sometimes the jobs are listed under other categories but it is what RT people do.
