A research scientist must be able to ask questions.
Approach questions critically in laboratory work.
And most importantly have highly refined communication skills.

The only way to develop research scientist expertise is to be in the laboratory, you can read as much as you want on paper or online, but it will not get you anywhere, you need practical skills, not just to be able to recite the principles of PCR etc...
