CHLA has a residency program for new RCP graduates or RCPs with less than 1 year of experience.

I graduated June 2011 and didn't find employment 'til this year as per diem in another hospital in February of this year, 2013.

So I applied in 2011, 2012 and 2013. For the 2013 application I even got my PALS and NPS to seem like a good candidate. So basically I'm an RRT-NPS with PALS which they highly desire! Go figure.

The application was available on May 10, 2013 at 9:00 AM. I woke up at 5 AM that morning to await when it would become available. Well, after applying I called HR to make sure my application was received and I was told that I was the very first person to apply.

Today I received this message:

"Dear[ name omitted,]

Thank you for your application and interest in the RCP Residency program for August 2013 cohort. We received an overwhelming amount of applications for the program; unfortunately, we regret to inform you that you were not selected to interview. Please visit our website at www.chla.org/rcpresidency for more information and important dates regarding the next RCP Residency program.

Thank you for your interest in the RCP Residency and CHLA!

Human Resources, Children's Hospital Los Angeles"

There will be no next time, since I will already be working for 1 year. I just don't understand how they select their applicants. I'm not even sure they go through all the applications.

RT has been the biggest mistake of my life. I should've studied something else. This career is non productive and everyone you meet is negative about this profession. I just became another negative person. No good doors have opened in my face.

[QUOTE who="Karen in El Paso, Texas"]hi everyone. I just wonder if anyone can help me please in this decision. I really like the diagnostic medical sonography program which im in process right now just staring it but if I would need a second option I will go for the Respiratory care program. The first program I would choose it would be the Sonography but people had tell me there is a waiting list and that is hard to get in, and if this is true I don't want to be waiting too much since I would get older and the earlier the best, since I need to start working the soon as possible and need to decide now if I might change now to the respiratory program. Have you looked at the program at DABCC, they should still have a an echotech program. Not sure why choosing sonography but may look at echo. Also if you did go into the RT program at EPCC you would get out and not find any work in EP and the pay would be low and overall the work enviroments especially at Sierra is low end. Staff that that have been there since it opened and never advanced in their education same as Providence with a work load that overwhelming and then there's Del Sol and Las Palmas same situation the RTs are just as bad.

The above posting I would stay away from being location is San Antonio, a city you do not want to live in or live near.It is a poor city and to add a city that cannot keep its RTs and also no advancement in Respiratory or healthcare in general.
I have worked in this city and lived off and on and after months I being there felt dumbed down, bored. The RTs in this city are not respected ,and all the hospitals are either firing there upper management or in transition to Nursing to run departments.

Karen, I don't think it will be wise to be on a waiting list for a college when you don't know when you could get in. I say, if that is what you really want to do, move to a neighboring city or state even. Or I say why not go for the Respiratory Career? If they don't have a waiting line.

I wonder what the pay difference is for both career. I know about RRT, but nothing about the pay for Sonographers.

I don't know about Sonography, but I know Respiratory has been a good career choice for me. I have achieved a lot since been a RRT and I get recognition and respect at work.

But final decision rests upon you. Do what you think would work best for you and maybe your family, if you happen to have one.

Goodluck in your career decision.

If you are seriously seeking answers to these your questions, know it has been answered a lot on this forum. Take some time and read through a lot of forums, you will get your answer.

To give you a brief summary answers to your questions;

- You make money depending on what state you live and work in. So, that your first question would be best answered by people in your city or state. Also, it depends if you are a lazy person or a hardworking person. If you are a lazy person, you will not make any money. If you are hardworking person and have a full time job and a PRN or 2 PRN, you will make over 80K for sure. So, you determine how much money you make depending on how hardworking you are.

- So, based on your city or state and if you are lazy or not or hardworking or not, determines how much money you will make.

- Every job is stressful. So, ask yourself, if you don't go to school to become a Respiratory Therapist, what will you go to school for? Answer that question first and tell us how that job is not stressful. Tell me the job you will go do that will pay you well and you will not be stressed? Also, will it be a 2 year degree or a 4 year degree?

- Respiratory is a very interesting, challenging and rewarding career. Work in the ICU where people's lives depend on your hands. Attend a code and play an active part and safe a life, then you will know the worth of this career.

CONCLUSION: Respiratory is a GREAT career. It has its ups and downs, but I will not downplay it. It is my source of income and the career that has made me afford my house and 2 brand new cars. I mean each car worth over $35,000 each!

Your career and financial future rests on your hands. Respiratory is not the only career out there, nor is it the best, but I am satisfied with it so far. Be wise and talk to educated people and at the end, make a informed decision. You are responsible for your own future.

Goodluck in your career choice.

Thankyou for your advice. I think the same. I would not be just waisting my time just for the program to start and I was thinking about doing something for that period if needed. Did you graduate from sonography? Do you know about the respiratory therapy program? I was really confused since they just accept a friend for the respiratory therapy and I was thinking that should be less competitive but dont know much about it. And also a friend that was in sonography tell me she could pass the test which I never heard of that test. But anyways, the main reason I was so confused was because If I would change to the respiratoy therapy I was going to do it now in order to start already and dont be depending then on whatever happens on sonography do you know what I mean?

Karen, research the diagnostic sonography profession thoroughly; if you're still interested, go for it. I know there was a long waiting list for it at the college I went to, and I mean an average of 2-3 years long. Personally, I wouldn't wait that long just to get an associate degree, but I recommend for you to utilize the time you're on the wait list properly. I know you'll be taking pre-reqs, but don't just waste time waiting for the program to start. If you can get a bachelor's degree in the meanwhile or useful classes, certifications, etc., that would be good.

I have a full time job in Texas but I am always scared of the future of Respiratory Therapy. I have been doing this job 15+ years and since day one all I would ever hear is how respiratory can be replaced. Of course, it has yet to come to pass. However, with health care reform and "Obama Care" there are provisions in place that allow states to loosen regulations on certain professions, and guess what Respiratory Therapy is one of those professions. I was talking to a RT that moved to Texas from Kentucky and she said the hospital that she was at got rid of most of their RT staff.

Hospitals are ran by RNs and not RTs. As far as RNS are concerned RTs are a merely a side note. Most hospitals are in the same boat in that they are cash strapped and they foresee the problem getting worse with continuing reduction in medical reimbursement. As the financial problems of hospitals get worse RT departments become easy targets for cutting cost. I would advise anyone getting into the health care field really look into what you are getting into because there will be hard changes to whole entire health care field in the near future.

Yes the full time starting wage is around 18 dollars an hour here, for a new grad. It doesn't include shift differential etc.

We have talked about moving to that area so if that particular hospital pays enough that we can move there and afford to live on my pay for a few months then it is a possibility.

Is it acceptable to call potential hospitals and talk to the CP directors and ask about pay and any other questions about the job before applying?

You guys should not be discouraged. There are a lot of other careers that people don't have very good reviews about. If you guys are going for a Bachelors in Respiratory, that is great for soon, I believe that will be a requirement in the field.

I am a RRT and love my job. It is stressful some times, but I really like the things I do for the patients. I work ICU most often, so it is different from working on the floors only and passing nebs.

Pursue your dreams of becoming a RRT. No career is really easy out there, but this is a good career. And if you get accepted and about to start your first semester, email me and I can help you in school to do well. My email is ebusiness66@yahoo.com.

And about you relocating when you find a job that is 5 hours away, that is a tough decision. You need to discuss this first with your husband before presenting us with your alternatives so we can help you decide. You want to sell your house, then go rent instead. Then husband has to go look for a new job. What is his field? What if he cannot find work easily? What if you don't like the hospital? So, keep your things and maybe go and live at that city and work there while hubby is back 5 hours away at your house with kids. But if this is not financially economical, then I guess you shouldn't move. Is the pay going to worth all this move? Talk more with husband about this. Together, you guys can figure out what is best.

If they ask you at the interview why you did not work for 4 years, tell them why. Do not complicate it. An educated interviewer will understand and respect you for raising your kids and going to school and now you are RRT. So, don't even worry about that. Just tell them your honest truth and don't act like you feel sorry about not working that period. Be proud of yourself that you were there for your kids while you made it through school.

Let me answer based on my own knowledge and how I would advise you, if you were a close friend. Others might tell you different.

Yes, tell them your availability based on when your husband is off. Driving for 90 minutes one way just to get to work is not an easy thing to do. And this job can get stressful sometimes, depending on what kind of facility you are going to be working at.

If you can do this and not pay for childcare, it would be the best thing to do, so you save that money by watching your kids and bonding with them. And hopefully, they do not cancel you on the days you signed up to work.

I don't know if in your city or where you will be working at if the PRN pay is $20. But that is low. Here in Houston, the lowest pay for PRN is $24 and the highest I have been paid for PRN is $30.50. So, if they pay you PRN $20, I guess the pay for a full time RRT there would be about 18? Let me know if you have that detail. That sounds pretty low.

As for your prior family engagements, you can basically tell them at the interview that you had prior family engagements and will not be available for that period. You are PRN, so they cannot fuss about that. All they care about is to know that you will not be available that period. And that takes care of that.
