Do you have any tips to help prepare for an upcoming retail sales associate interview?

Are there common interview questions that come up again and again?

some questions I have encountered are:
What are your strengths?
How will you deal with a difficult situation?
How can you contribute to our store?
~Knowing questions like this is very helpful & go over before an interview~

Preparation is key so it's good to see you are focused on getting ready for the interview.

Some of the basics include showing up on time, dressing professionally and showing appropriate energy to communicate your level of interest in the position. Tied to that is the idea that you'll want to be able to come from the perspective that what they are looking for you've (a) done in the past and (b) will do it for them too.

Be ready to go with question such as, "tell me about yourself" and "what are your biggest strengths" and (this is a big one) "what are your weaknesses".

You can really separate yourself from the competition by having two or three questions to ask THEM at the end of the interview. A good question, tied to the things they are looking for demonstrates a lot. In my experience most people being interviewed either don't ask any question at all (the silent killer) or ask the wrong type of question (ie how much sick time would I get).

Are you applying based on an advertisement you saw? Go back and look at the ad and pull out keywords in the ad. Does it say they are looking for someone flexible? Be ready to tell them how you've been flexible in the past. Are they looking for someone customer service oriented? Have two to three examples of excellent customer service you provided in the past.

Use the above tips as building blocks as you prepare.

To your success,

To Candace:
Lessons from a drama class I took back in H/S may help you: When experiencing stage fright like you do (i.e., getting "choked up" and saying something "stupid"), I would recommend rehearsing your lines. Imagine what they will ask you, and then rehearse until you sound smooth. Also, whether you are being interviewed by one individual or a group, pretend you are speaking with a good friend or a parent, explaining your goals and expertise. If you start to feel nervous again, slow down in your speech and think before you answer. In other words, just don't blurt out something. Good luck! You can do it.
