Quite a few great tips in the previous post. In todays climate its all about how to get the initial interview. There are so many of us retail managers out their, compitition is great. Hopefully when you left your last company, it was on good terms, one thing I have learned is never burn your bridges and in an interview never talk badly about your last company. Have 5 other people read your resume before you submit it, I update and rewite mine all the time. References are also extremely important, how they ansewr their phone, what there recording is like if they are not available are two of the most reasons folks will not get the job. And of course what they say. The law pretty much says what old employers can say but trust me I was able to get the "off the record talk" everytime I called on reference checks. I was lucky I left on great terms and my references were perfect. The one that landed me a new job was my old Store Managers who said, "He was the Rock of the store" so remember dont burn your bridges and good luck to you all |

Mary in Mission Viejo, California said: How about being able to spell correctly and put a complete sentence together? I think the first person answered their own question........don't answer these questions unless you can properly discuss them on an open forum without making yourself look like a fool!! I am so with you on this one. It is terrible that individuals, even educated ones, do not believe that spelling and proper grammar are not important. |

You have to: be a strong leader who can earn the respect of his subordinates, know how to recruit and retain the right talent, and be a great motivator. (the first and last reason sound redundant but I don't believe them to be the same thing.) |

To be honest with you.. I don't care if the person spells like a redneck or an illiterate foreigner... I care about their passion. If a person has passion and dedication I would take them over any of you. For crying out loud it is retail... No one here is running for editor of the year.. calm down and know your role. |

You need PATIENCE. The patience to listen, the patience to train, the patience to achieve results and the patience to deal with the corporate world...Beside the obvious basic understanding of how business works, If you have patience and a clear vision everything else falls into place. |
