I have worked in Safety for the past 8 years in both construction and General industry. Being a Safety professional is not something that you can just "become". Most people in safety will tell you that the job seemed to choose them rather than them choosing the job. If you are seriously wanting to get into the safety field, you will need to work with your employer to begin some safety training. The best thing for you to start with is to take some OSHA classes. The OSHA 10 hour and 30 hour certification will get you started. OSHA regs and safety best practices are always changing and evolving. You have to stay on top of them, always reading and checking for updates. If you are serious about being a Safety professional and doing a good job, get a deree in a safety field. Some schools offer these online now (Eastern Kentucky U and Columbia Southern etc) There is a lot more to being a safety man than telling people to wear hard hats and safety shoes. If you do the job right, be prepared to be the most unpopular guy on the construction site. But, if you do your job right everybody goes home the same way they came in. |

With a new administration coming into office there willbe a renewed interest inworker safety. MOst companies will have a safety committee...this is a good place to start your safety career. Schooling always helps and you will see most organizations are looking for degreed safety managers or (CSP) Certified Safety Professionals as a minimum skill requirement.

Sounds like you have the experience, now you should look at obtaining the formal education (i.e. B.S. Degree, engineering, science, chemistry, physics, or math). The BCSP will be a good starting point. |

I had a problem with the safety guy in my jobsite. I was listening to my ipod on the job and it was my 3 day on the job. My foreman told me it was permitted to use it at the job. That day a man comes up to me and tells me that I needed to remove one of the headphone speakers out of one ear, I replied why? then he told me that, that's what is allowed. I replied ! who are you? he answered that I didn't have the right to ask him that and told me if I understood what he had told me later he say that in spanish I told him yes, me being bilingual. I replied, I have the right to ask who you are? he responded I'm the guy that can run your a$$ out of this job. I replied I don't care but I still needed to hear him tell me what was being obvious to me, but he did not say to me who he was. Minutes later my foreman came and told me that I had to leave the job for a day and I needed to leave now reason being for my first encounter with the safety guy. The reason was my attitude. I feel upset about it, so I'm asking for your truthful opinions so please reply. thanks. |

Angel, an Honest answer to your question would be that your first experience with safety was not a good one. Safety is not always about standards, policies and procedures its also about being helpful, caring about people, communicating hazards, attitude and approach.

There are plenty of available positions for Safety in New York. I recieve calls pretty consistently and I am in Texas. I turn them down since I do Not have the NY Safety Management license which I believe they should require in more areas. There is a twenty year job tunneling in New York right now where they are seeking Safety. Was just called three days ago (12/21/2010) and again, turned it down. I recommend taking the course for the Licensed Safety Manager, pass the background screen done by the New York authorities, take the exam and refine your resume. The jobs are there and they are paying well. Good Luck and Merry Merry Christmas to all! Be Safe! |

Depending on how large your city is, you should have a local or regional chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers near your area. (ASSE.org) Join and rub elbows with Safety Professionals that will key you in to a good start. |
