Gaining employment in the safety profession.

I am switching careers, I have experience as a Quality Inspector within the railway industry. I also hold an associate degree in electronics/Telecommunications and I am a volunteer with the Red Cross as a Disaster Assessment Field Operations Specialist. Currently I am enrolled in a Bachelor of Science Occupational Safety and Health Management degree program. The problem is that with my experience most employers are giving me the opportunity to interview for safety positions and I do very well on these interviews, but I am lacking the experience to what they are looking for. My question is how do I gain employment in this very exciting profession of safety and which organizations are willing to hire individuals who are pursuing their degrees?
