the best tip I can give any starting out bus drivers and drivers already on the job is safety..without safety nothing else really matters.

Your pre-trips are a part of safety. check bus before leaving the yard...and check (post trips)bus before returning to the yard. MAKE SURE CHILDREN ARE NOT ON BOARD.

remaining cool when presented with an out-of-control situation.

Never leave a child alone on the bus.

Proper sleep.. If you can't stay home and sleep you don't need to drive a school bus.

What a cheesy thread.

What are the top 3 traits or skills every school bus driver must have to excel?
(1) A clean driving record; (2) a clean blood system - no drug use; (3) intelligence, ability to learn how to drive a bus; (4) ability to deal with stress and think analytically of what to do in a second - such as when jerks pull around busses, speed pass busses, kids running across the street.

The very main job of a bus driver is to assure a child is safe and not contribute to dangerous conditions which might hurt or kill a child - such letting a child off at the wrong stop or at a busy intersection.
