What are the top 3 traits or skills every security consultant must have to excel?

Unfortunately, there are several skills you should have to become a successful consultant. But the top three...? Try this:
1. Strong character - integrity, self-confidence, etc.
2. Public speaking - with a group or senior executives
3. Organizational/time management - to keep the business running

Additionally, you should have functional experience in your area of expertise; have an educational background supporting the focus of your consulting market; and attain the certification or other association-based credentials supporting your expertise in your field of consulting.
