How did you get your start doing security guard work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

i started working as a security guard for celanese in Bishop and I ahve now moved to bay city and am looking for more of a security job because I liked what I was doing over there but the thing is that it's not as hard as this big places because it's a small community. I'm for some reson scared to even make applications for security at some places because what if they are harder or different from the things that I know. Should i be worried? i don't know what to do really...

for security all company's train
you for that job.Before i got into security i took a course in
private security,Been in field
for 14 yrs became a patrol road
supervisor in less then a year
after that got of road patrols and went to site supervisor.
Supervisd six security officers.

great security job with a Criminal Justice backgound.

I live in Alaska and unfortionetly I have to move just to even apply to become a security guard. They refuse to hire you up here without experiance. I dont have any skills as a security guard but am working on an associates for criminal justice. Is there anything I can do to make myself a more favorable canidate to employers?

I've been security for 8 years and running, I am currently an Armed officer in a State building, I like it, its steady pay and good hours, I left the security field and tried manual labor...well thats not for me. There are company's that will hire you with and knowledge of the field. Don't give up and keep trying.

I ment to say there are companys that will hire you with out experience.

Our Security Officers come with a varied amount of backgrounds and training, but keeping yourself clean as far as the law is concerned and being drug free are of upmost importance.

My previous job was in a bank we were always doing security procedures, we only has guards during Christmas, lol
Now I am going to take a class this week it is a 2 day class, and then a 100 question test, this apparently gives me the right to go down to the city and I will be certified to be a security guard. this class cost $80 and they help with job placement does this sound like a normal and goos start in security?
Also What are normal salaries? what advancement opportunities are there and how quickly can one advance?

Wonder if my company will allow me to take online course to get Class D security license. Also, if I'm allowed to do this what is the charge for an online course or is there a charge (any other info you can give me on geting Class D security class is very much appreciated).

Going for your class D security lic no problems some security company's
will allow it but they would tell you to take a class offline but the best
class to get into is Criminal Justice you can go a long way with that
online criminal justice is ok but you would get more out of the class
at a school offline.

If you want to work for securitas the dumber the higher you climb to the top. don't work for this company. Bad very bad in N.E Ohio Akron Ohio

As a Assistant Director of Security in Las Vegas, I recommend all the new Officers I hire even if they have experience read the book, "Observe and Report", Behind the Scenes with Security. This book allows officers to see what can happen on the job in the words of actual officers. It also is a great book to understand how you really move up in this career field. Recently, I found out that this book is becoming required reading for some Criminal Justice courses on the East Coast. It costs less than taking a course only to find out you really don't want to be in Security. Worth the money and more.

Do i need a valid drivers license?

No you do really? Most companies want it but it's not a requirement. If you choose to be a D license guard, your looking at around 8 to 10 per hour with usually no benefits depending on the company.

Most security companies are contract agencies (AlliedBarton, Wackehunt) they pay low but they always hire new people.

Just get your license in class D to start.

I just went to the local employment office for the state and filled out a complete resume online free then looked at 3 counties' books listing all jobs then went to the field of law enforcement and then security, loss prevention and other and looked at the job listings there. They sent me to one job for an interview and the mgr. of the security company in that county called me at home then called my cell phone. You usually have to have a home telephone and one cell phone number that is in your name only to get a security job. You need at least two references.Everything was verified I put on my online resume and also I have one at Monster, hotjobs, indeed.com and beyond.com. That helps along with the major CareerBuilder.com I think the url is called.The other job I appled to was sent my resume free from the employment office without me paying postage for it. That company never contacted me at all. Then I found out the mgr. of that other county office had moved to the city to the other company which called me so I met him actually at that office when I was hired. He had switched employers.

Security classes leading to a degree in Criminal Justice are now available at most technical colleges like they are here in the next county from me.

I had a G.E.D., not a high school regular diploma and I had taken a few Criminal Justice courses at the local technical college. Then I had worked for 3 years at the big 4-yr. college doing security after working almost one year for Wells Fargo before they were bought by Burns International which also owns Pinkerton. I had a choice of being laid off when they bought those two or continuing on as a Pinkerton guard. I did not wish to do that so I just went to educational security which I came to love actually. Those references got me industrial security work later one. I would like to be a supervisor now and I am over 50 so I have had an application online at several places looking for a certain type of security position since January even though I was employed by a firm at that time.

Maureen, I hope my info is helpful to your daughter. I was in the U.S. Army then I did regular maintenance and outside sales door to door for awhile then met a guard who told me where to apply at an industrial plant. I applied there and they told me they PREFERRED former military service personel so they hired me with Wells Fargo. That major company was bought by a larger global company and then I went from W.F. to college educational security just by applying on campus to the Security office usually located in a student on campus apartment complex main building. I was hired there and did college security at a very small salary(the companies have to bid to get the security contract)for 3 years and the company got replaced by one I had worked for doing maintenance so I sought a position at the employment office with a different company and they sent me to that office in the next county where I was hired based on two references from females(one works for the Dept. of Justice FBI--semi-retired)and my years of experience in educational security. During my working time for one company I saw the operations mgr. leave and was replaced for an Army Specialist. Sometimes military personel who are serving with the Reserves are also with security company upper management. There were several prior service male guards at the big college where I worked and only one other female prior service who had been in the Air Force. I do not recomment joining the military at this time. My friends in the Army Reserve left because they found out they would be sent to Iraq. Just do a complete online resume at major places like HotJobs.com and they will make your resume available to any employer who wants to see it. They also keep a log of how many hits employers make to your online resumer which was helpful to me

My advice is to get that Associate Degree in Criminal Justice because they gives you an increase in rank usually as an armed or unarmed guard going security. I have taken several courses in that at the local tech. college even though I am seeking a different degree there. I almost have that degree. I have worked the past year in security and another guard there over me is seeking her degree in the same thing you are seeking yours. Employers look for college degrees to hire supervisors mostly and management. A guard does not ever need a college degree of any kind but sometimes experience of at least one year doing security of any type(retail, loss prevention, educational or industrial). Prior military service backgrounds help one get a security job, also.

be aware that if you make the choice into being certified through ASIS as a CPP, PSS, or whatever, it's going to cost some money. It is well worth it, but the cost of the testing for non-members and in over $500.

Sounds like you should look for something else to do. In the Security field, there are professionals like myself who are trying to raise the standards in security, which in turn will raise the pay. In many places, security officers have limited to full Law Enforcement Authority, depending on the state, their training, and the account.

Other places, security is in high risk, high crime areas. If you are afraid to take the challenge of the position, and improve your skills because you think it will be too hard. Please, for your safety and our, find a new job.

In the state of Florida, you can not take the course on Line, You must attend the 40 hours of training, If you want your G, that is another 28 hours, plus range time.

I was particularlty interested in Sharon R. of SC's comments. I am new to SC after living in Connecticut and working in security for 4+ years. I find things a lot different as far as security goes in SC compared to CT. Back in New England, I could get all the security jobs I wanted, even working double shifts if I wanted to. While the money wasn't great, most companies usually paid between $10 and $12 an hour. I've worked in corporate environments, at ESPN, a major museum, etc. for Securitas, Guardsmark and some in-house firms. When I relocated to SC, I assumed the jobs would be plentiful and the money nearly comparable to CT. Unfortunately, so far things haven't been as I expected here. While the economy is sluggish now, I still expected more opportunities than I'm finding now in SC. Furthermore, the pay scale is pitiful with some hourly rates as low as $6.55. Pay rates in other fields are also lower than in CT but food and clothing are basically the same price as back east. I like security work but right now I am quite disappointed by the lack of decent jobs available here.
