Jesus Collazo in Saint Cloud, Florida said: Hi jonathon in Pompano Beach, Florida. My name is Jesus and I am looking to get in the security field. I have many years of professional Experience (P.D.). If you started your company already, what was the most difficult part of it.

In Florida, you need to have your class D license first. If your going to be armed, you also need your class G. Once you have those, you need to apply for your class B license. Before the agency license is issued, you will need to have your insurance and workers comp in place. I am currently going through this in West Palm Beach. I have a full staff of people working to get this going once the license has final approval. We are 100% veteran owned and operated. Some of us also have LEO or Corrections experience.

Hope this information helps.

Jim,

You may want to speak with Bob Geiser in PA. He's got something going like that with Miltec.

Chrissy

I can't say with certainty regarding other states but in NYS you must have a security guard certification. The application process is through the Dept. of State and includes fingerprinting, background check and of course a nominal fee to the State of NY to the tune of $141.25. All of this plus the classroom will get you an unarmed guard in NYS. If you want to be armed, yes of course there is additional classroom plus that additional cost as well. Of course if you are a police officer or NYS corrections officer you can be exempt but still must go through the application process.

Starting a security is inexpensive and cost effective.
However there are certain protocols or steps one must take to acquire, and build a security company. With as little as 2000 man hours as security officer one may apply for a private patrol operator’s license (this license is required in order start a security guard company). A big misconception is that an individual with a guard card can use his guard card license to operate a security guard company. This is of course incorrect. When a security guard uses his guard card license number to operate a security company, He is breaking the law. In most states its classified as a felony. And even though the individual security guard may only receive a slap on the wrist (cease and desist order/fine or both) this action will add to the hurdles this security officer may face should he/she decide to obtain a legitimate private patrol operators license. Its better if one obtains the correct licensing in the beginning rather than taking short cuts.

Another problem exists with incorrect data on the cost of starting a security guard company is posted. Browsing the post on this site blog, I’m reading post that state security company startup fees as low as 140.00 or 160.00
This is incorrect as well, the general cost for your application fees, live scan/finger printing, and processing cost, exam cost, will total out to around $900.00 , and then you still need to pass the exam.

I also think its prudent to mention that simply working as security guard for 2000 hours will not prepare you for this exam. Nor will it prepare you for starting a company in this industry. You will need to be experienced in the following areas:
1. Human resources.
2. Federal labor laws.
3. State labor laws.
4. Proposal design and presentation.
5. Contract designs and negotiations.
6. Federal laws pertaining to security guards.
7. State laws pertaining to security guards.
8. Bsis guide lines pertaining to security guards.
9. Bsis guide lines pertaining to private patrol operators.
10. Worker compensation laws and requirements.
11. Insurance laws and guidelines as they pertain to the operation of a security guard company.
12. Generation of clients.
13. Knowledge of client’s security needs.
14. Knowledge of client’s requirements from a private patrol operator.
15. Billing procedures.
16. Collections.
17. Recruitment.
18. How to keep personnel.
19. How to keep clients.
The items of attention continue…………………………………………

Simply put if you’re looking for quick buck with little work you’re in the wrong industry. I’ve been in the industry for 11 years, 7 of those years has been in management. I’ve known security guards that started there own company. There broke and belly up in less than two years because they didn’t do there homework.

NOW ONE MUST FIRST REALIZE THAT SIMILAR IN NATURE, A PRIVATE PATROL OPERATOR IS DIFFERENT FROM A QUALIFIED MANAGER.
AND OFCOURSE THERE ARE ADITIONAL LAWS, REGULATIONS, AND LICENSING REQIREMENTS PER-STATE, COUNTY, AND AREA OF SPECIALIZED OPERATION. HOWEVER THE FOLLOWING IS ALL THAT IS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN SAID LICEMSES.
IF YOU ARE A NOVICE IN THE SECURITY INDUSTRY, OR IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCED IN THE SECURITY INDUSTRY, AND YOU ARE CONCIDERING THE PROSPECT OF OPENING UP YOUR OWN SECURITY COMPANY. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE ARE INDIVIDUALS OUT WITHIN THIS INDUSTRY THAT WILL MAKE THE JOURNEY SEEM UNABTAINABLE. THIS IS DONE BY MAKING BRAUD STATEMENTS LIKE: YOU WILL NEED A BA-DEGREE, AND YEARS OF SPECIALIZED TRAINING. OR THEY WILL TELL YOU IT COST THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND YEARS OF DEVELOPING CONTACTS BEFORE YOULL SEE A PROFIT. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. IT’S SIMPLY THERE WAY OF KEEPING DOWN THE COMPETTITION.

Private Patrol Operator or Qualified Manager
Requirements for Licensure
A private patrol operator operates a business that protects persons or property or prevents theft. In order for a company to seek licensure as a Private Patrol Operator, the Qualified Manager (see below) must have passed the licensing examination. In addition, each individual applicant, partner, or corporate officer must meet the following requirements:
• Be 18 or older.
• Undergo a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); and
• Have committed no offense or violation of the Private Security Services Act that would be grounds for license suspension or revocation
To apply for a company license, submit the $700 company license fee, two recent passport-quality photographs and a Private Patrol Operator Live Scan form signed by the Live Scan Operator. A $32 DOJ fingerprint processing fee and a $19 FBI fingerprint processing fee must be paid at the Live Scan site for each applicant, partner, and officer.

He knows he has to come up with a business plan first. He has a lot of experience in the security business. He's in law enforcement now, where he now works for the sheriff department for our county. We really want to get a start on this business immediately. If there is anyone who could help me with this it will be greatly appreciated..

She knows the tax laws for every state in the country and the partners at her firm are all experienced in the tax laws too. She has an Associate in Business Administration and accounting as well as 15 years in the accounting and is working on her CPA, as we speak. I need a partner that is reliable, honest and respectful as well has some security guard experience under them. I would like a partner that does not have any type of record and will pass a drug test, so if we get any banks or other finacial firms I do not have to worry about anything, this is per my insurance guy. I've been in the security industry for 18 years and I respect a person who wants to start his own business. It really shows drive and initiative. However, it ethics have any meaning to you people invest your funds elsewhere(unless you really enjoy exploiting other people). I have no respect for security companies and even less respect for people who work for them. I just couldn't sleep at night knowing that my employees are getting $9.00 an hour with no benifits. Some people call this field a proffession.

Not if you have a 60-year-old, half asleep, $9 an hour rent-a-guard who can't speak English who's been in this "profession" since he landed on Plymoth Rock. This job would be ideal for college students, retired law enforcement, people who are in between jobs, and lifetime homemakers with no work experience, and those who already have a full-time job. Those are the people I would hire because those are the people who can afford to work for the low wage. I lifetime rent-a-guard I would not want. So if you start a company, take this into consideration.

Congrats on your new business!

We started ours 6 years ago and, despite the economy, are still going.

How are you coming along with the required worker's compensation and general liability requirements? We can provide a nation wide insurance for you, but our program is unlike any you've probably ever heard of. We do not require a deposit, monthly premiums, audits, or payroll projections. You would pay as you go meaning your insurances are paid every hour your employees work. This way there are no surprises at the end of each year. This makes managing your cash flow simple.

I would like to talk to you more. Please email me at ksmith@workforceconsultinggrp.com . All quotes and consultations are free.
