Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

What skills should you learn to increase your salary?

Depends, contractors usually pay $35- $75/hr. I have worked mostly depot level maintenance and you can learn a lot from it, just about anything structural including composite. Volt and Planetechs are currently hiring for as much as $45/hr. Check it out at aviationemployment.com , JSfirm or indeed job search. If you work for the airlines with union and have A&P license they probably pay more.
