do software engineers have to move around a lot?

lets say you work on a project that takes 2 and a half years. Are you usually able to find another project to work on in the same area or do you typically have to move into another geographic area to find work?

And do most software engineers work in a firm of software engineers, or are they usually independent contractors like the ones I've been able to find so far?
