Im a dental hygienist and i cant decide if i want to study nursing or sonography. Im working as a dental hygienist right now and suffer from occupational injuries to both of my shoulders(trapezius myalgia and tendenitis) and also wrist pain. Im afraid that the field of sonography will have some type of related occupational injuries, so i dont want to go through schooling and find out that im going to be having the same body issues as dental hygiene. Does anyone here report any kind of occupational injuries related to sonography?
Nursing does not seem to have any issues that will exacerbate my existing body issues, thats why i keep gearing toward nursing.
I need your professional advice.

Dear Dental hygienist ,

Sonography is not the field for you. There is more injury related to this field then for your field. I am just saying. I am injured and I know. The RSI-MSI which is well written in literature for scanning alone, you also must push and pull heavy equipment and move furniture as well. Nursing does not seem to fit either because you will be assisting patients in bed requiring significant stress on your wrist shoulders and other.

I think we should have just been car salesmen;ladies , it is less stressful on the body. It is sad to know we spend years in school, love our jobs ,but must give them up due to injury!

How is the job market for sonographers? I know there is a waiting list of 2 years here, can you get a job when done? I am in the nursing program and contemplating changing over to sonographer. I will try and stick it out, but started having anxiety when I went to the acute care setting. (wondering how I will handle all the stress of the job and patients coding now) I really put myself into my work. I have always loved dental hygiene for the past 20 years, but wanted a full-time job. It now even looks difficult to find a nursing job now, --can you believe that???

There are far greater job opportunities in nursing then sonography. You can get over your fears, its common. I would stick with nursing, there are so many avenues and advancement available. I love sonography, but injured ,however if your already headed in that direction , stick with it.
