Hello. I have a minor frontal lisp. I can't hear it myself but I have one. I will begin recieving Speech services in September. I am currently a undergraduate for speech in NYC. My overall GPA in speech is a 3.9. Do you feel that my minimal frontal lisp would impede me from getting into a graduate program? |

No,I don't feel you will be impeded. I am also an associate professor in a graduate speech program, and, I have residual speech differences (having had speech therapy as a teenager) . Receiving intervention will greatly enhance your ability to model sounds accurately and to empathize with your future clients and can thus be considered an asset to your graduate school application .

I just wanted to comment on natisa21's question. I have a B.S. in special education. In my program, the professor who taught us the Language Development class, and also taught on behavior management, who was a full professor with decades of experience, spoke with a stutter. This did not hinder him from teaching, nor did it hinder our understanding of his classes. It seems as if a speech difference would actually give students/clients a good example of someone who didn't let differences stop them from achieving high goals! I myself have a learning disability and ADD, and it's helped me understand students better. Best wishes. |

I know multiple girls in my grad program that have had speech difficulties in the past. It won't get in your way! If anything, it should help. Just be sure to work on it if that's what your professors/therapists suggest. |
