What are typical speech language pathologist salaries? Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

Medical field is the way to go! The schools here pay 28,000-32,000 salary, however I am currently doing home health and salary is 84,000-88,000. Very big difference and WAY LESS STRESS!!!! This is the highest I have seen though for a non-management/supervisor position. I am not sure how the hospitals pay in comparison to this. I think to increase your salary or to become competitive you should increase your skills in the Dysphagia/Dementia areas. These seem to be the biggest populations of adult therapy.
