the job is changing. before, you got to do a lot more, but now, with endoscopic surgery, staples, and new electro cautery devices (like harmonic scalpels), there is not as much for an assistant to do. used to be you had to clamp, cut and tie, but now harmonic devices like the new focus does it all.
