What are typical technical writer editor salaries? Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

What skills should you learn to increase your salary?

I was paid $40k a year as a tech writer for a startup airline at Dulles, but my position was just eliminated as the airline isn't doing as well as they would like to pretend it is.

I think one key to higher salaries is to know many different software packages and to have some business knowledge, as I do of the airline industry (20+ years). Another major plus in the DC area is to have a security clearance. from what I've seen, that's worth at least $20k on your salary.
