I'm reasonably academically trained for a career as a technical writer, but unhappy with what I'm finding as my career prospects.

I earned a BA and a BSc in 2004 and have a 2-year diploma in technical communication in 2010 from a community college. My BSc was in a program called Business Computing, and it was primarily designed to train people as systems analysts.

My technical communication diploma included a lot of courses on journal and proposal writing. Any advice on how I can find a career writing in a more academic/research extent?I'm finding that most university faculties hire the writers responsible for conducting research to document their research. Either them, or statisticians. Any advice would be must appreciated.
