Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

What skills should you learn to increase your salary?

I earned mid $56K as a test engineer for several years with a smaller company. I am currently making $80K as a test engineer with a larger company.

In some places, like here in northern VA, and in southern CA, where I used to be, test engineers are working on things for the defense industry, and need clearances. A clearance is expensive, and raises your salary. For a product like a satellite the customers are very sensitive to post delivery failures. Experience and being able to handle the pressure contributes to higher pay in those environments.
