Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

What skills should you learn to increase your salary?

That depends on what sort of utility work. For example, I am currently looking for a Sr. Utilities & Lease Specialist, which handles utility payments for the Port here in Seattle, billing tenants, and some meter reading. We require 3+ years utilities experience and are looking for analytical skills, cost recovery and problem-solving experience. General utility experience in any of the types, since this position handles water, sewer, electric, natural gas, and alarm monitoring as well as garbage and recycling. The pay is $21-$27/Hr (midpoint) to start.

Other utility jobs involving construction, service and repair are usually union jobs and may pay more or less. I'm not familiar with the salaries but we do also have a wireman opening that pays $40/hr.
