I am considering becoming a vet and am starting out in community college. I was wondering if I should first get a two year degree to become a vet tech so that I could work while I do the rest of my schooling. Would vet tech courses be helpful to a pre-vetinary major at a university? Or should I be taking different courses? Would getting and associate vet tech degree be a waste of time?

This is a very late reply, but hopefully it will help somebody. Vet techs can do very well in vet school, as having those technical skills helps build confidence. However, a vet tech degree will not include the prerequisites you need for vet school and once you're in you probably won't be able to work much if at all anyway. Vet school is just too demanding. I would recommend doing a pre-vet program at a CC instead.
