I am currently in walla walla WA and i am taking online courses to be a vet tech, i just have a few questions.
1) Do the practices in walla walla pay vet techs well?
2) Are there any good places for a vet tech to work here?
3)I am going to start a family soon with my wife and need to know if i can comfortably support my family.

I greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me here, thanks

Hi Shawn!

Congrat's on taking classes towards obtaining your degree! :) I just wanted to mention that you NEED to make sure you can sit for your boards--to do so, you will have to graduate from an accredited program. There are only two that I know of here in Washington; one is in Yakima and one is in Tacoma.

As far as job listings--I know Pierce College will post jobs on their website, maybe Yakima will do the same?

For supporting your family, that will completely depend on where you end up working. I have been able to support my son and myself, working part time. I bought a home (granted it is a TINY home...) on what I make, and still meet basic living expenses. We don't have much wiggle room..but we do it. The only drawback for me: no health insurance provided. I work in a single dr practice...

I know that probably doesn't completely answer all of your questions, but hopefully it helps!

Good luck~

I worked at a clinic in walla walla for a short period of time and the standards were not good and the pay was horrible. I relocated from California and am not licensed but was trained to do everything that a tech can. I was told that my skills would be utilized and they weren't. Being out in the "country" the practice did not have up to date routines or sterilization. I now commute an hour away to the tri cities to work at an animal hospital. Pay is better and the hospital is state of the art and top notch. They also let me do everything I was trained to do. Which is a lot more than most assistants anywhere. As for schools go to the AVMA webstite and find the link of accreditated schools through them and attend one of them. That is what I am doing even though I have all the training.
