I am curious as to whether or not college is necessary for a career in film editing, or if talent and a good portfolio of work is much more important.

I think a good portfolio works in some cases, college or some degrees it's necessary for some specific jobs. My husband is trying to start in this field, he will finish his college in April of the current year and many jobs ask for experience or some college degrees.
