"What are the top 3 traits or skills every video editor must have to excel?"

1. Excellent sense of pace and timing.
2. Ability to visualize the written word and express it in pictures and sound to achieve the producer's or director's vision.
3. Ability to work well with others in a collaborative environment

A.while being able to calmly and rationally explain your creative decisions and
B.while being able to handle criticism.

Anything else you can bring to a project as far as your skill set goes is a plus, but not necessary if you have at least these three basics.

Obviously knowledge in the softwares is important too.

Probably a good handle on pacing and styles. Ie: Comedic versus Dramatic, corporate, documentary, experimental etc.

A constant willingness to learn more is also very important.

1. Have a sound working knowledge of your HARDWARE...
2. Speed in delivering your cut &/or revisions...
3. Foresight to recognize costly pitfalls far BEFORE they happen...

Then loudly shout NO WE WON'T JUST FIX IT IN POST!

I second this. This embodies video editing. Color correctors and sound design are separate jobs, no similar than director and cinematographer.
