Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

What skills should you learn to increase your salary?

I just saw this listing for "Visual Information Specialist" opening in a work newsletter...although my pay is above average for my field of work, I'm not yet at this level.

Visual Information Specialist at the Defense Intelligence Agency
• Salary Range: $65,048 - $84,559
• Duty Location: Arlington, VA
• Summary: The Defense Intelligence Agency seeks to provide timely, objective, and cogent military intelligence to war fighters, defense planners, and defense and national security policymakers.
• Major Duties: As a visual information specialist, you will design a variety of materials for the DIA, including websites, brochures, multimedia presentations and CD-ROMS, using a variety of software imaging programs, such as Photoshop, DreamWeaver, and Illustrator. You will ensure that DIA publications and materials presented to the Director are highly readable and user-friendly.

This is basically what I do for USACE in Mississippi as a contractor, and have been doing for several years. SO...it DOES make a difference WHERE you are in relation to what you get paid. My degree was in "Commercial Art Technology" which is Graphic Design. I then went further with "Business, Communication and System Technology". Maybe 20% of school training has contributed to my gain. Most of my knowledge in the field comes from hands-on training and tech seminars/classes over the past 10 years.
