What is the best training for becoming a waiter/waitress? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective waiter/waitress?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

I have served tables for the past 3 years. I started when I was still in college at a local bar and grill. Little did I know what a world of oppurtunity serving tables was going to open up for me. After my short training period, I began raking in tips left and right. I also met a ton of new people (both co-workers and customers). Luckily, serving tables is not the hardest job in the world, but nor has it ever been the easiest. To be a good server: you have to be motivated, acquire a lot of energy, have good people skills, BE ORGANIZED, help other servers and always listen to your managers (that is the key to proving what you can do). I could go on and on about what other skills you need, but overall these have been the most important to me. Good luck to all!!
