If you have a unite here union in your area go talk to them. I have been a waitress for 11 years and unite here has been there for us. They are a very strong union to be a part of. They really care about the workers.

Hi, I am actually doing my PhD on waitresses and trying to organize them/us (I was a waitress for years, now studying, but after promising myself to never waitress again I'll be doing it again for my research!). I know California has Unite and they are really strong. I waitressed in S.F. and there was a huge difference in wages, breaks, rights, etc of waiters! I'll be doing my research in NJ, and I know there is a Unite, but seems to only have the Casinos unionized. I am interested in ideas and opinions on how to organize smaller, independent establishments.

I really think there is a way, but maybe we have to think outside the box a bit! Maybe a network needs to be created of waitresses from different local restaurants so that when we do unionize we unionize together.

And I think people need to realize that the job is hard and valuable and should be treated that way! WAITRESSES UNITE!

Anyway, if anybody is interested in talking to me further I would really love to hear your opinions, ideas, struggles, experiences, etc.

Good luck to you!

I agree with all of you above, I have been a waitress for over 22 years, 20 of it was in Phoenix, AZ....get this, because Az is a right to work state..I never made more than $2.60 per hour..a couple places that I worked, we would actually have to pay the accounting dept. to pick up our paychecks that were 0 dollars because they were too small to cover taxes..isn't that insane? Because it was a right to work state, we always worked very long hours with no breaks, no overtime, no insurance, ect...conditions were terrible.

Want information on starting a waitress/waiters union in Tulsa, Ok. Can you help? Is there a national organization for waitress unions? Will your organization support our efforts in Oklahoma? Please send any information available. Thankyou

I work at an upscale casual restaurant in downtown Atlanta. As servers we are paid 2.13 an hour. The restaurant also host large banquets, and we work those as well but do not see a tip out because the restaurant puts the banquet tips on our checks, so after taxes you hardly see any banquet money :( We are definitely not unified here in the city and it's depressing. Restaurant owners take advantage of the cheap labor and over schedule the dining room which means less table and less tips. Over scheduling the banquets as well. It's become a time where we need to express our feelings. Not to mention my restaurant has been good to me, I was able to travel and come back to work after 5 weeks. Without a union , we are all just out here in the world serving, making a restaurant a lot of money (experienced severs only!) and without help if we are treated unfairly. Being fired without reason is very very common in the serving world. to be continued ..

Hi my fellow servers!! I am in Tennessee ans have felt this way for over 20 years. I am an experienced bartender and a server as well being paid only 2.13 an hour. I feel as a bartender you should be paid for experience and servers as well. At the company I worked for they made the servers pay out to the bar and host no matter what because they don't want to pay them full wages. this is wrong for a server to have to pay the saleries of others when the company is a multi millon dollar corporation. this makes me sick!!!!!!! let's get these guys girls and guys because we need to be heard!!!!!

Hi again,

I have received a couple of emails from fellow waitresses and it seems that everyone is really spread out - we are really coming from all over the country with the same concerns. I am interested in collecting the stories, concerns and issues that waitresses have both personal and larger issues welcome. I am actually a filmmaker and think I could use this skill to really create a larger awareness campaign that, maybe, could gain momentum. Anyone have access to a camera (doesn't matter how good or bad) - mind taking it to work, or maybe out of work recording you and your fellow workers stories? Collecting the stories and placing them in one space and then lets see what we can do with it.

Just an idea. If you are interested let me know here or email me at

I've met a lot of waiters and waitresses in my time.
Not all, but most of them have pretty good personalities.

But many of them seem destined for mediocrity, or worse.

This is just an idea, but if you think you're capable of a lot MORE, and have some desire FOR more, this might interest you. www.tips4waiters.info/

If not, that's okay too.

Regardless, Merry Christmas to all, and remember the reason for the season!
