1) Be Very Organized with a plan on how to handle your daily responsibility, SHOW INITIATIVE

2) Practice speaking in front of the mirror if you are nervous/shy about addressing a group. Subordinates will walk all over you if you present yourself as a pushover

3) Never make promises you can't keep, you will lose credibility. Reward your subordinates for excellence. (Remember they make you shine, and the company succeed)

4) Learn your position 360 degrees, I can't stress that enough. Your 1st 90 days should have people talking about you in a positive manner, provided you are consistant and effective with your leadership.(My company had a union shop & I still was able to work side-by-side to pitch in whenever needed to accomplish the mission.
My team was awesome, and wish I could have taken them to my next gig, no joke).

I was told by union guys with over 25 years of service, I had the only team that worked together, they respected what I was doing ect, and I never had a problem with them. The respect was the nod I needed to reinforce you can make a huge difference.

Ultimately it was senior management that I had a problem with. While some overpaid chump does 8-9 hours and spends time with the family, I constantly did 14-16 hours per night because they would not let me give these guys an incentive to finish
early and get paid. The company took a very "dim" approach to this and don't realize how you kill morale. It's not all gravy on the management side. You will find some of your superiors dumber than a box of soggy cereal. I've been on both sides of the fence, so I'm giving 1st hand reality.

5) Develop your team, cross-train them, rotate responsibilities. You will make them a more efficient unit. (I did this so well management told me my team no longer needed a supervisor, and they re-assigned me to another group, and fortunately my next gig for 25k more was approved the same day so I resigned on the spot. I trained my replacement to succeed me!!

A little comment for Just the Facts, I could not agree with you more. I spent 10 yrs at a company and worked my way from stocking shelves to Leadhand. I spent 5 of those yrs as the Leadhand. All my guys kept telling me I should be running the place. Having the guys do cross training was the best thing I ever did. Even though it was a union shop, the guys thanked me for being allowed a chance to receive knowledge they would not of been allowed to receive under a boss going by the CBA.
One thing I think you missed to make a great team is to give credit where credit is due. I had presented ideas to management that they approved and had me impliment. When they would come to the warehouse for the pat on the back in front of the whole group I would get funny looks from som e when I would tell them who to give the pat on the back to. the funny looks usually came from management and the guys in my team could not belive I let them have the credit. I find it's the little things like that make you a good leader and build a strong team.
