What is the best training for becoming a welding engineer? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective welding engineer?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

To become a welding engineer you need to go to university and get your B.S. Welding Engineering Degree. This is what defines a TRUE welding engineer.
Two good schools to look at are Ferris State and Ohio Sate University.

I know pen collage has a great program as well as laturno(sp).
Those are the only four schools I know of with BS degrees.
There maybe others, but those are the four I'm most familiar with.

There is a welding engineering blog that covers a lot on this subject, with articles, explanations and links to several of the best resource sites. VisionaryWelding dot org
There are many articles and helpful comments. The main three welding engineering schools are Ferris, OSU, and LeTourneau. Links are there, as well as to various welding-industry job resources.
