Limited licensing?

Some states now offer a limited license for x-ray tech's. What can you do with this and who will hire you? Also what is this position called at most hospitals. Any help on this would be great.

Depending on the state, LMRT (Limited Medical Radiologic Technoligist) can only do limited things like JUST x rays, no CT or MRI. You will mostly be hired by doctor offices and clinics. I am an LMRT student and plan on going back to school to become a R.T. If i were you, i would go to R.T. school rather than LMRT. You make 5-6 dollars more starting off! Check first about your state.

Question: I am currently going to school for LMRT. Would I be able to go to school to become an RT after I finish because I am currently going through an 11mth program or does it have to be a university college?

I hear you have to complete your math and anatomy & physiology in order to get into an RT program. That's the way it is here in Texas but I'm not sure where you live.The program takes about a year and a half to two years depending on what school you attend. I am currently in the LMRT program and in order for me to get into the school I had to have a diploma but again you have to find out from the schools around where you live. If you complete those two subjects that are required with a GED the school will still accept you.

The school is actually suppose to place you in a job.Even if you don't like the environment or starting pay they will keep looking. Ask your school to double check.

Hi Eric,
In Illnois they do recognise the Limited Radiology Licensure. First, have you registered for a license with the State? Here is a link to their website with more information iema.illinois.gov/radiation/radtech/radtechlogin.asp
Even if you were licensed in another state that license must be transferred to your current state your residing in.

You can get an R.T. License with a GED it usually takes about 2 1/2-4 years depending on your program and collge you attend. Where are you located?

I had a question. Ultimately, I want to become a Diagnostic Ultrasound Technician / Sonographer. Is there a way or a program where a LMRT can become one?

Hi Josie,
Unfortunately the Limited Radiology Program is specific to Radiology Courses and are a different modality than the Ultrasound program. Taking classes in Radiology won't get you any closer to being a Sonographer, there two seperate programs of study.

I'm getting ready to complete my Xray Medical Tech. With Limited scope. I have been attending a private college in my area. The program gives you an Occupational associates degree as a Certified Medical Assistant along with a license/cert. in Limited scope. The program is 14mo. long. I'm currently working for an Imaging center where I'm also doing my internship.What type of pay should I ask for upon completion of my state boards in April?

On the high end the pay scale is usually between $14-$16 per hour depending on your location and availablity in the area.

there are not many jobs available for LMRTs in San Antonio at the moment. In austin there is a much more demand. The salary here differs from $10-17, depending on were you get in.

that is false! in texas, especially austin, houston, and san antonio, the pay ranges from $10-17. i have only heard from TWO that made $16-17 in the whole school of graduates. If you get into a hospital though you are more likely to make more money.

I also failed to mention I have seen ads trying to hire tech for 12-14 dollars in chiropractors offices...obviously that's not the way to go. I am praying for 18-20 to start and if I can make it to $25 within a couple of years I will be happy. more money than I've ever made.

Yes Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, TX allows a non medical person to apply for the sono program, it was only open to ARRT and RN's, now it is open to all.

I WOULD not reccomend LMRT SCHOOL--instead funnel your energy into an accredited university in RADIOLOGY TECHNOLGY--pay is much better, plus oppurtunities to grow are very limited for LMRT--

AGAIN as I have saying since the LMRT program took off--its a alright program but if you want to get ahead attend a credited university for Rdiology technology AND BECOME an ARRT instead--career advancements, pay, AND OPPORTUNITIES far exceed those of an LMRT--

Check this out...all of you who are looking to do limited scope X-ray...you are all wasting your money. If your freaking lazy and don't want to go to school join the Army and sign up as an X-ray tech. The course is only a year long and you can take the ARRT registry. I'm going to tell you something that Diane Wood R.T.(R)(BD)ARRT who is title happy is not going to tell you.

1. There is a Care Bill that is currently sitting in congress which states hat individuals, prior to performing or planning medical imaging and radiation therapy services,demonstrate compliance with the standards established under subsection (a) through successful completion of certification by a professional organization, licensure, completion of an examination, pertinent coursework or degree program, verified pertinent experience, or through other ways determined appropriate by the Secretary, or through some combination thereof.

That means that your Limited X-ray job will cease to exist.

2. The San Antonio area is saturated with X-ray Techs...Army's Medical Radiography Specialist Program, The Incarnate Word University and a couple of community college all have X-ray programs. Your pumping out over 40 techs every six months out of there! Do you want to compete with that???

3. How much money do you want to make...I don't know about you but 14/hr is what I make in 1/2 hour. Step it up go take your pre-requisites and get your freaking education.

4. Radiology is a very dynamic field...with all of the changing going to digital there is new equipment coming out all of the time do you really want to limit yourself on what type of equipment you can use.

5. If your smart enough to pass the state ARRT your smart enough to pass an ARRT registery...have confidence in yourself.

I'm not trying to be an ass here I just want you all to know the realness of the situation. Education is very important your registry is very important. Radiography is the trunk to Radiology. Hommy

damn right ^^^ the real truth is, the care bill is long over due and friends, honestly don't shorten yourself out by just going to limited schools who just want one thing, money. it doesn't help you in the long run or us in the field.

hommy... did you go to the military for your x-ray tech education? I'm very intrested in the army and their x-ray tech program... but i'm a little worried about gettin a job after... does any1 know what and if any certifications you get from the military.. and is more schooling required afterwards? and what would it take upon completion of the military to do ultra sounds? and is there really a limit to advancement in this field? It seems to me that this field has an endless amount of growth and money... And one last question is this considered a male or female occupation?

Anthony, I did join the military to recieve my education as an X-Ray technician. The military is a fully accredited school by the ARRT they are the governing body for x-ray certification nationally. This is great because you get paid to go to school. Now X-ray and Ultrasound are two completley different jobs that have no relationship to each other is like comparing apples to carrots. So what I recommend is that job shadow at a local hospital. Check out X-ray, CT (Cat Scan), MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, find out what you like the most and talk to the techs that already have that job and find out the pro's and con's. Right now Ultrasound is booming they pay really good, however, it is usually a two or four year degree for that program. Do not do the limited scope radiology it is a waste of time. thanks a lot hommy... upon talking with my recruiter i think i'm just gunna go to the military for heavy eqpt operating because i can get a shorter enlistment... they want 6 years for x-ray tech... it just doesnt seem worth it to me because i can come out and go to school for it after the military... i'm doin the military for free school and steady work until our econn picks back up.. but if you know that i can get a 2-3 year enlistment for x-ray let me know cuz i'm sure you know how these guys lie their asses off!

bro do not go into the army for heavy equipment operating...that does not make sense anyway let me tell you something if your going to joing the army you can plan on being in for the min. of 8 years. Every that is getting in is being extended pass their contracts. With that job you are going to sign up for you will be doing most of assignment in Iraq for sure. So you are better off signing up for X-ray because then you will have your G-I Bill in addition to your training. If you want the best thing is to join the Army reserves so you can do six years the easy way and maybe only get deployed once. Let me know but think about that.

hi omar u need to make sure wht kinda programme it is, if it a lmrt or dont do lmrt bc max pay is 15 an hr .

Wow, is the pay really that bad there in San Antonio? I live in Cali and In the future plan to move there. I'm currently taking prerequisites for the x-ray tech program here. I plan to be a Registered X-Ray Technician, if I move to San Antonio about how much will I be paid?

Whether or not you believe radiology is great and these people are lazy. Why would you tell people to join the Military to get their education, heck the Gov't can't get the GI Bill straightened out for the guys to get their education for the 1st wave from 5 yrs ago. That is if they make it home alive or not insane or mamed. Be careful what you are advising people of as honorable as it may be!!!!!

You are certainly right, for all of the people you are, so called advising, BEWARE! You are correct, it is honorable to serve your country, it is not so honarble though to seek out people to "advise" to join the military with the intentions to come out with the same knowlegde and understanding as maybe you have. That is if you do. If you are going to "give advice" tell all, the good, the bad, & the ugly! LMRT is a licensure through your state and state health department (if looking into a school make sure they're accredited and they meet state requirements). LMRT's do diagnostic x-rays only, which are upper extremities, lower extremities, chest, spine, and skull. Some schools do an overview of soft tissue or abdominal area but RT's do those procedures.

Diagnostic x-rays are bones only,from head to toe. Procedures seen are usually broken limbs, dislocations, fractures,impalements, spinal injuries, just to name a few. LMRT's can't do invasive procedures which are CT's , MRI's, Nuclear Medicine, Fluroscopy.

An LMRT would have to further their education in order to do those specialties.

Is there a demand for this career? That's tough to say because this career is fairly new to some states and for other states they may have had LMRT's for 10 years plus. For example for Austin,TX they've had LMRT's for only 4-5 years now. So, some Hospitals hire LMRT's and others won't. Just depends on what the facility is looking for. Make sure you let them know what you as an LMRT are capable of doing. It's all about marketing yourself and showing them how knowledgable you are of your field.

Salaries vary depending on the state you're in. For example Austin,TX ranges 16,500 to 40,000 average 30,000 (to find out salary range in your area salary.com).

Can anyone help me with advice. Im currently attending Limited x-ray w/ medical assisting program. I have decided to go with long term dream of becoming an emergency room/trauma r.n. Good Day All- I currently live in southern Calif.There is a new vocational school that has just piloted a Day program for LXT.For individuals such as myself, I had to find a program that allows me to get my foot into the radiation field.Knowing that my scope of study is limited, this is compared to an LVN title vs.RN title.2 completely different fields however it is a stepping stone.Obviously the course of RT is the idea but here we must consider the waiting list.The new program here has just been granted digital radiography, which by far is a blessing. In my opinion judge what is based on your needs and you will see that other doors will open.

sorry but it's just another program to make more money and saturate the field. I am sorry to say LPN is no way compared to a limited x ray program. At least LPNs have jobs but limtied x ray techs may not even after graduation. You may spend more money while going to a limited x ray school than just going straight for the 2 year program. I just disagree.

Limited scope xray techs....So what is the story? I have been licensed to shoot chest and exremities for over 7 yrs in Az. TAKE MY ADVICE PEOPLE......JUST GET YOUR R.T. I went to school for 7 mos. In Az you can get your RT in just 2 yrs...it's worth it.
