Do you have any tips to help prepare for an upcoming activities director interview? Are there common interview questions that come up again and again? |

When you interveiw for an activity position, I think it is a really good idea to be prepared for it and take samples of what you do along with you. Such as craft, art projects, newsletters/calendars you have made up and ideas of what you would like to do there at the facility when you are hired. But you want to be careful not to give all of your ideas away to the interviewer. I have been to several interveiws when I soon felt that the interveiwers where asking me questions they could use for there program development without having to hire me.

My boss's first question to me was "What was the first thing that you noticed when you arrived at the facility?" She was obviously looking at the way I answered the question such as "the people and how friendly and polite they are" and I must have said the right thing becasue she hired me! |

Along the same lines, what should I wear? I am an energetic & cheerful person (which they are specifically looking for!) & that is generally how I dress. (Tasteful, fashion-forward, upbeat.) Do I really need to dress dark & conservative for the interview?! Are closed toe shoes necessary when it is over 100 degrees outside?! |

Does anyone know of a good reference book to do care plans. I'm not sure right now if I will be working with Psychiatric patients or in a Rehabilitation Hospital. So I would need both.

I would hire someone who dressed more conservatively. That doesn't mean you have to wear black. In hospital settings they often frown on open toed shoes because of the liability issues if someone were to run over your toes with a w/c etc. |

Wow, that was a long time ago! I did get the job even though in my interview I wore a fashionable jacket & straight skirt (just below the knees) & tall black boots w/ pointy toes. I wore a larger cuff bracelet & hoop earrings. Just today my director laughed when I told her that "sensible, sturdy shoes" were suggested. She said she would not have hired me. I only say this because I think my situation is proof positive that there is room for a LOT of different kinds of people in activities. A few sparkly people could change the face of healthcare! |
