Are jobs in this industry on the rise? Are there any sub-sectors that are growing? Where are the jobs? Which places have the most activities director opportunities? |

Like nursing, many just aren't majoring in this field nor do many want to work in nursing homes. I've seen the Activities departments nixed completely in some private facilities, but luckily remember, they are protected from the State dept. of health and do have to follow some strict guidelines. Its funny because the regs for becoming an AD are more strict but the quality of AD's out there is declining. Everyone seems to be running to computer and tech jobs! It scares me because the activities director is SO important! Assisted living facilities are popping up everywhere but the original intent for AL is not the same as it used to be. Try there first in your area and call and see who's hiring then go for it. If you have no experience, try being an assistant or aide first. |

I think it all depends on the area you live. I live in a tourist area and activity directors are needed here. Not just for nursing homes, I work for a timeshare as an AD. |
