What are they looking for when they do a background check? I was asked to bring a money order for $75. Is this for a license? I did something stupid once, over 2 years ago, and I'm afraid it will show up on a check. I shoplifted around $20 at a store on a dare and got caught at a base exchange. Will this prevent me from gettng the job?

Yes, most definately. Any kind of theft will usually automatically disqualify you.

I take it you're applying for Cage Cashier on a Gambling Boat? If so they'll look hard b/c you're handling big money.

Generally a criminal background check will be 10 years. They'll logon to Mississippi DMV records. You can check it yourself if you have a credit card. www.dmv.org/ms-mississippi/driving-records.php (It generally costs $20). The $75 is most likely for Credit history, DMV and fee for the 3rd party to conduct the search.

A DMV check will show driving tickets, DUI (DUI is a felony)and felony. It may not show up if they classified it as a misdemeanor. And that misdemeanor record is held in a county court.

On the application they generally ask if you've been convicted of a felon not petty theft or J-walking.

Check your record and be honest on the application.

When you are applying for ANY job where money handling is your title and especially when we are talking about LARGE amounts of money/Casino field...THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PETTY THEFT. In the event that you were a minor during this time they may even ask you to expunge your juvenile record. Saying no to this request can pretty much guarantee that you will not get the job, as they will think that you have something to hide.
