Check out long term care facilities, larger ones offer free training in exchange for a commitment to work for them for a certain period of time. To my knowledge, you can work as a health aide with no certification and the employer will sponser you but again it comes with the stipulation of working for them for a set period of time. There is no free ride in this society of profit and greed. Good luck in your search. Jim

I live in the Canton / Massillon area and am an STNA with over a year experience. I've worked in mostly LTC's but have experience in acute care, rehabilitation, post surgical, and psychiatric hospitals through a some staffing agencies. My question is can anyone help / direct me towards a government job full or partime in this field because the severe condition of most residents I'm assisting is too much for the meager wages paid and agency doesn't give me the stability desire.

Hi Jim-- I'm transitioning into Nursing (RN), but I used to work in Human Resources for the State of OH for the Dept. of MR/DD. You might want to try Heartland Behavioral Health in Massillon. They have Therapeutic Program Worker positions that don't require STNA certification. The Dept. of Mental Health, MR/DD and Veterans Home (Nurse Aide there) don't require any certifications and the pay starts around $13.50. I'm trying to get in at MR/DD in Cleveland... best of luck!!!

Thank-you for the advice and good luck in your future goal of the RN program and MRDD. I find it dis-heartening when I don't even get a [resume recieved] reply after applying for open, posted positions. I grew up with a challenged older sister and have connections with the local MRDD yet still no luck. I am hopeful regarding three job opportunities I had initial interviews for last week. Even though it is "illegal" I am more and more convinced my age [55] plays a large part.

Hey Diana, I keep trying and trying to find something that brings me joy, working with elderly people with no bladder or bowel control, oxygen tanks and cannula's, and mental illness is just not getting it and Heartland--no reply, but I have started with a group home very near home and I think it is going to work out in all ways, maybe even a foot in the door with the local MRDD.
