Red Cross and Catholic Charities charge about $850 for their Certified Nursing Assistant training, which is more than most people who want to go into this field can afford. Does anyone have any leads on CNA programs in the greater Boston area that are more affordable?

Thank you.

I don't know about Boston, however, NYC have "FREE" cna programs through the Board of Education. (Adult Learning Centers)
Perhaps they also have this in Boston? Call the board of Education and inquire. These things are rarely advertised to the public. I just got my CNA thru this "free" program and I have a full time job. No low income guidelines required. Only things needed is "citizenship, social security card number and pass a simple reading comprehension test.

Call the facilities in your area and ask if they offer CNA training. Many facilities will train you in their facilities. Other facilities will pay your tuition and book for the course through a local community college. You have to pick up the phone and call the facilites near you and inquire. If you prefer to pay for your own class, you can contact the local community colleges yourself. If you need financial assistance you can also contact your state employment service to see if your state offers programs which pay for the needed training for this career. Many states offer assistance with child care to aid those with small children wanting to take the course. Lastly, if you are interested in this you need to look into the going hourly wage for this position in the area you plan to live and work. Also, before you accept a job, walk through the hallways and look at the employees. Are they smiling, frowning, interactin with their co-workers or patients? Does the facility smell of urine or feces? Do the residents look clean and well kept? Are they postioned in a comfortable position? Do the patients look happy or bored? All of these can be clues to help you decide if you want to work there! It is hard work. It is a calling to do this work. You must really want to make a difference in your patients' lives. It is a necessity in health care. If all we had were doctors, how would the sick patient heal? Sick, hurt or weakened individuals cannot take care of themselves! Every position is an important one! Each job that you do to your best ability is one in which to be proud!

Wondering if there are any places that people know of in the Bay Area/San Francisco that do not cost $2500?

And what is the credibility of taking the class online? Does the certificate look the same to employers?

Thanks!

How easy will this have been if we could take online classes, but i guess there is more practicals involved. But the rate at which the cost of taking just the classes is ridiculous. Imaging in the Chicago area at class location that was around $300 in the last 2years has bumped up to almost a $1000.
But I want to know, are there more disadvantages in enrolling at a facility that offers to pay for training in so far you work there for "x" number of years at a lower wage compared to the the national average?

Peter in Naga, Philippines said: I'm seeing a lot of comments that CNAs are really not getting fair salary..Is it generally? or are there any place which they pay CNA better? I'm currently attending class to be a CNA here in the Philippines and I'm very much planning to apply abroad in the future cause I know how much shortage of manpower that healthcare is experiencing..I can see that the average income of CNA in US is about $12-18/hr but there are some who only offer as low as $7/hr. Im confused, should I still have to feel motivated in pursuing to work there? I've read some comments and it seems to me that CNA work in the US isn't considered as a work one to be proud of and a lot of people say that they're ashamed of speaking to others of being one.How come it came that way? CNA work is very important in the healthcare system..Is it because they do all the dirty stuffs?

my advice if your in the Philipines be a nurse not a CNA, leave CNA jobs to the people here in the US.

They do dirty for real, but most CNAs want to talk their careers to the next level, either become a LPN or Registered Nurse. Its a long short but its wothwhile.

i am in the Chicago area and i am trying to enrol for free training cna programs while you work in the same establishment. Folks around say you are bound by the establishment who offer this free in-house traning for like a year where you work so long hours only at this establishment, earning less than the national average pay, and it takes like forever to enrol you for the national certification exams, just because its free. pls let me know the advantage of actually paying for this classes oneself, then seeking employement after certification. they say this makes job schedules so flexible, you can negotiate your pay and work 2 jobs, etc.

I have taken the 127-HR basic nurse training class which qualifies you for the State of Illinois Competency Exam in 6weeks. They say I can use this class certificate to get a job for 9odays before the Exam, but most of the nursing centres and hospitals on the Northside of Chicago want you to pass the exam before offering u a job, can anyone tell me where I can a job on the Northside with the class certificate for now?

The catch is that there are certain eleigiblity requirements for their enrollees. The program receives funding from an outside source for each student they train.

Hi I'm new this site.I want to Thank sister janet for the iformation on lpn courses in ny adult education center mid manhattan .I called to get more information and i was lucky. The application deadline to apply for the lpn courses was one day ahead. So i quickly went and recive the application. The people was very rude and nasty when i got there and did not to provide any information. What i read on the application package is that you have to be hs graudate 21 years and older. You will also have to take a pre nursing assesment test which is 35.00 and they will schduled a test for you.The only thing is that i'am very nervous.. i really want to pass.Is there anyone who took the test and pass. Can you tell me what is on and is it hard.I have not been in school in a while. Also was the course intense. It is 10 month course starting in sept 2008.And is not free its $2,000 but it include books ,grauation dues and uniform i belive.
