Actually your best bet is to apply for a position at Evergreen rehab (downtown Portland) or Vermont Hills in SW Portland. They will hire you and train you to become a CNA. Several "CNA Schools" have started up(one of which is also a Home Care Agency) in the area but they charge big money and as a Professional Educator of Nursing Assistant I can tell you they are over priced and you can get what you need plus be paided if you sign on as a nursing assistant in a care facility that offers free training. There are facilities you do not want to work in however....check them out and do your research. I wish I could list them but I can not do that as I work in the profession. I have learned that the people who run the training program are less than ethical (actually incredibly unprofessional). Research your options...get on the phone and call all the Nursinf Facilities in the area and find the bets deal for yourself. You do not have to buy for your trauining! That is the bottom line! |

I have another opinion on the free nursing assistant programs. The free programs do offer one way to get into the medical field and some of them are good programs. If you really do NOT have the funds to pay for a program this can lead into a good paying job. I taught with the Evergreen Corp for while also, but I did see some problems with them. The problems arise mostly with the corporations having a diffrent idea of what they want than YOU do in your training. These programs are under the authority of the OSBN but often times the corporate leaders do not like this and want them run THEIR way. I saw this first hand in my position as the Staff Development Coordinator at the building where I taught. Also, if someone does NOT pay for the program, they sometimes do not take the training as seriously as others who do pay. Most of us NA instructors have seen these issues first hand with the 'free' students. And, this goes for the ones who are sponsored by faciltities at the programs who charge for this. But here is what you really need to know, if you pay for the program at one of the good training centers, the nursing facilities MUST PAY YOU BACK. There is a law that says they will reimburse you for the program in full, within the first 12 months after you finish the program. There are ways they can do this, for instance, if you wait 4 months to get hired, they will only pay you for the remainder of the timeframe; the last 8 months owed you. However, hospitals do not reimburse as well as assisted living. Call the OSBN for more information on this. ALSO, the nursing facilities CANNOT FORCE YOU TO WORK FOR THEM. Even if you sign a contract, there is a law that states you cannot be forced to stay even when you received free training. Again, ask the OSBN about this. You need to know your rights under the law. If you are told to sign a contract, that you must stay and work, call the board of nursing on this, PLEASE. Now if you decide to work there that is different-continued> |

Irene - you can get free training to become a CNA in Portland, but you need to be prepared to commit to work for a skilled nursing facility for at least 6 months. You don't need to work there full time, in most cases, but most companies are only will to pay for training for students willing to also make a commitment. To get into one of these programs apply online at www.OregonCNAonline.com. Good luck with your career plans! |

I am interested in becoming a CNA, but I am wondering if I am to old to do this. I will be 45 years old and I have had a couple of people tell me that I probably would not be considered for the program due to my age. I have a clear criminal record. I live in Washington state. I would like thoughts on this please before pursuing. Thank you, |

Good Morning, 45 is not too old. you should come to an orientation today at 2pm. Caregiving Careers is located at 9011 sw beaverton hillsdale hwy, Portland, OR. We can answer all your questions. Thanks Heather |

Does anyone know what the starting salary for a CNA near Knoxville, TN is? Thank you !!! |
|
Sharon K. Brothers in Portland, Oregon 10 months ago |
You're not too old! While working as a CNA can be physically challenging, more mature caregivers can add stability and life experience - which is extremely valuable. DO follow up on becoming a CNA. I don't think you'll have any trouble getting into a program, at least not because of your age! Good luck! Sharon |

All of you who wish to become CNA's need to understand that you do not have to put out loads of money for training. There are many Care facilities in the Portland/Beaverton/Hillsboro/Salem and etc area that will train you free (with a commitment to work at their facility for a certain amount of time). Actually, this is a great opportunity. The CNA school's are out to make $$$...to think otherwise is naive. You may also talk to Vocational Rehab (State of Oregon) or The Oregon Department of Employment. A few phone calls will prevent you from having to put out money you do not have. Why would you want to fill someone else's pockets with cash when you can get your training free (plus secure a job and get paid while training - it is win-win situation for you).

Just an FYI to all CNA students: we now have a CNA review course to help you get ready for your state boards. It is offered via the internet, so no class to attend. It has practice tests (scored with feedback given immediately) and lots of skills videos that break the skills down into simple steps. It's available at www.aquiretraining.com/CNAreview - it costs only $39.95 per student. |

Thank You, that is very sweet of you to say. I truly appreciate it and want you to know we have all worked hard to have our program be the best it can be. Our focus is on the students needs. We all understand that students come to us with difficulties and desires and really need a place that helps them through the process. We aspire to show you the respect you deserve and the integrity of our profession. We all care about the medical profession here at Caregiver Training Institute. It is not just a business or a way to make money and pay ourselves a wage. It is commitment to you and your future in the medical field. And, it is a desire to pass onto the next generation of caregivers the highest quality of training in the profession.

The fees at your institute Julie, do you have to pay up front or can you pay after once you get a job and can you make payments? |
|
Julie Bucher in Portland, Oregon 9 months ago |
Hi Kacey, why don't you come into the office and we will see what we can work out. We do not have a formal payment plan but often can figure out something that will work for both of us. I do require that you are paying all along and the full price must be paid before you go into the clinical setting. Call us and we can talk, Julie Bucher, Program Director |

If you are unemployed, go to any employment office in Oregon and you can apply for the 'Work Source' funding for the program. We are on the list of approved schools that THEY will pay for. You can also go through the Mt. Hood and PCC community colleges work source programs. We are on all these lists of approved programs. There is money out there for this program. Don't call them either, the wait on the phone is horrible. Just go in early in the day and get the application for the program to be paid. If you have trouble have the worker call me. Go to the web page at www.TheCaregiverTrainingInstitute.com for the phone number. Some of the worker are using an old list that does not have us on it. Good luck! Julie Bucher, RN. Program Director. Julie Bucher in Portland, Oregon 9 months ago |
Caregiver Training Institute offers daytime, evening and weekend classes. The daytime classes are from 8AM to 4PM Mon-Fri for 2 weeks in class & 2 weeks in clinical. The evening classes are from 5PM to 9:30PM for 4 weeks in class & 3 weeks in clinical. The weekend class is from 8AM to 4PM and it goes for 5 weekends in class & 5 weekends in clinical. The clinical times are as follows: daytime & weekend classes are in clinical at 7AM to 3PM and the evening class is in clinical from 3PM to 9:30PM. The cost is $950.00. This includes the books, criminal history checks & fingerprinting that is required by the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN). Your other costs are things like; a TB test, a CPR course, your equipment needs are; a gait belt, a stethoscope and a BP cuff (optional but recommended), scrubs and shoes, a watch with a second hand for vital signs, note-taking stuff like pens and a folder for your handouts. Here at the school we offer low cost BP cuff/stethoscope kits for $55 (they are around $85 retail) gait belts for $15, and our CPR class is $50; the card is good for 2 years and is the Health Care Provider card (PCC charges $59 for this class). You will need to come to one of the orientations to get registered. They are held several times a month and at various times. They are free and can be very informative. You can register and pay or just register and then decide on which class you want later. You will need to call the office for the dates and times and to get on the list for the one you would like to attend. They last about 1.5 hours or so.

So lets see, one out of more than 200 people has a bad experience and have some very hateful and angry commnents about us and you think this is freedom of speech. So, let's look at your situation. You had at least two opportunities to voice your concerns in our program. They are called evaluations and if you did do this, you certainly did not scream abuse of students on it. I read every one and this did not come across. Nor did any of your cohort say anything negative AT THAT TIME. And, if every one of the students sat in a room and called to school and got the voice mail, well we only have 3 phone lines, guess you loaded them up and got sent to the message system. You went through the program many, many months ago so why now are you chooseing to blast us? If you had been so very intent on telling me this, if you had followed through back THEN, yes I would liked to talk with you. But I cannot do anything about your situation now. You could have come into the office. I have an open door policy and I would have spoken with you. So, to set you straight, we do not charge for fingerprints anymore. Policies do change and old information is just that; old and often incorrect. We do not use that facility any more either. Not because of what your problem was, if any, but other issues. And, that instructor is not with us anymore. Again, how things change. As for you knowing more than a nurse, guess I don't think so. As for sayings; If you don't like what you are getting, change what YOU ARE DOING. And, You are in charge of your experience, your future, and your life. No one else can make a bigger impact on yourself than YOU. And how about Gandhi: Be the change you wish to see. So Samantha, I think you responsible for your exerience more than I am. I am just the vehicle for this program. You can only please some of the people some of the time. I am actually very sorry for your problems, I hope things in your life improve. And again I will say, please call me so we can talk. |

nicholette bannister in Gresham, Oregon said: To Whom This May Concern: I would advise you to call long-term care facilities that offer CNA training classes in your area and ask them about training policies. Do they offer free training, how long are the classes, etc. For a complete list of CNA schools go to www.cnatips.com and select your state. You have to call them and ask about pricing and other info. important to you. Ask if you can go visit the facility and talk to the DON or the RN in charge of the program. If they need CNAs they will be glad to help you. Best of luck to you! |

Julie-- I never once received an evaluation form for the school. If I had I would have love to have filled this out. I did try to talk to you and what I got was the same attitude I am getting now. Someone who thinks that their way is the best way and they are not willing to listen to criticism. I am not trying to argue with you I just wanted to voice my opinion about your program and the flaws with it that I felt there were. You can berate me, feel sorry for me, and hope my life gets better all you would like. I have a great job and I love what I am doing. I am not voicing MY opinion out of anger or because things are not right with my life. I an voicing MY opinion because I feel that your program does not live up to what you promise it does and I feel that people who are looking to go to a good school to get their license deserve to hear it. You have proven yourself to be unprofessional by taking down my first post of your school. If you are so confidante in your program why would one bad review bother you so much? As far as quoting Gandhi I think that quote is over used, and people use it when they have nothing to say themselves. It is easy to hide behind someone elses' words. I will not be calling to talk to you because with your hostile attitude nothing will be accomplished. You have a very strong opinion on why I am wrong about the way I feel, and so nothing productive would come of it. I think that a true professional would have not even gotten into an argument about this. I wish you well |

Are you really sure you want to spend the tuition for CNA certification? The tuition cost versus the wage offset is depressing. I am a Nurse manager for a local hospital in Virginia Beach and I see first hand what CNA's must perform as job responsibilities. Now mind you, I am NOT telling you that CNA's can not provide for themselves, but the salary is meager. Before venturing down this path, find out exactly what the positions are paying and what responsibilities are required. Most likely, if not selective you will end up in a nursing home changing bed pans, removing dirty diapers and tuition will be due. So please consider this very carefully. "Remember be the change you want to see" |
|
Sharon Brothers in Vancouver, Washington 8 months ago |
Becoming a CNA isn't a depressing job, although it is a significant journey for the eventual payoff. Many people who start as CNAs end up as managers, nurses, physician assistants or in other professional positions. Starting with direct care isn't a bad step - it's really important if you want to advance in health care. One other option to consider is becoming a Certified Caregiver or Personal Care Aide. This certification will prepare you to work in assisted living or in-home care, or to contract directly with families for caregiving work. You can often earn pay comparable to CNA pay and the entry isn't as difficult to access as CNA training can be. You can learn more by googling these terms or checking out the aQuire Training Solutions website for details. We need good, compassionate caregivers, with or without CNAs! |
