Sorry, I didn't quite include everything in my last comment.. Please email me at streampaw@gmail.com if you know where I can get clinical experience evolving around patient contact (administrative tasks don't count, sorry, but that's how medical schools are). Thanks. Even any sort of clinical volunteer experiences would be great that evolve around patient contact, or some sort of science research, or lab work. Even cleaning labs would be great, or putting away lab supplies, anything. |

You can obtain a Caregiver Certification through a 10-hour online course which you take at your own pace, for $49 at Caregiverlist.com - the training has been formatted and approved to meet state training requirements in the few states which require training for professional caregivers. You can find the caregiver training modules here: www.caregiverlist.com/SeniorCaregiverTraining.aspx |

Hi, streampaw. You don't actually need a caregiving certification before becoming a caregiver. I worked in an Assisted Living Facility for a while and started with no experience as a caregiver. Have someone help you write your resume to emphasize any transferable skills though. The place I worked gave me GREAT health care experience and eventually trained me to be a med aide. In other words, I was supervising other employees and in charge of assessing the health of the residents when the nurse was out. I got to help save a few lives by sending them out to the hospital in a timely way...which doesn't hurt to put on the admissions essay to a medical school. It was very hard work, but sounds like you're used to that. And I'd recommend if you got hired to be a caregiver somewhere, to buy a used CNA textbook and go over a little of it every day, because there are some valuable stuff in the CNA training that some caregivers don't know and so won't train you on. Good luck! |
