hi Dipaul,

Thanx for sharing the encouraging replies in the post. Its not that easy to enter in clinical research as coordinator or associate. I have MS in pharma science from US and I have been trying for a long time to get into clinical but no luck so far.

Hi Sumit,
You are more qualify than most of the people in the CR industry with your MS in pharma believe. However what you need is connection in that industry. Do not twist your time and your money by taking another course or training. Because they are making life better with your misery. The only training or session I recommend you are those organized by the ACRP or SOCRA where you will also meet with people working in the CR industry.
The CR activities are about Monitoring, Reporting, Preparing SD, etc, and each company has its own SOPs and processes on doing CR activities so if they are really interested to hire you, they will train you on how doing your job there.
I repeat don't give your money to any CR training or program it is a scam even if it is organized by an university or well-known academic institution. They are making money on your naivety and misery.

I would still continue with McMaster. Of course McMaster do not garantee any job/ offer or any Coop programme. University education is university education. If you still did not get a job you can then join a Contract Research Organisation (CRO) paid or volunteer or Co-op and then get a a real job.

If you are in USA (NJ) then you should join a CRO organisation who can give you a job and then write SoCRA or ACRP exams without much of theory training. In Canada getting a job without experience is almost impossible and there are no Contract Research Organisation (CRO) who has a structured training program and paid apperentship.

I saw their program, it's very simple, not "university" level. Humber has a better program. Every year they graduate about 30-35 students in Clinical Research Program, and just a few of them couldn't find a job (nobody knows why & what would happened if they went to another program, probably the same result).

No. I do not work for Mc Master University nor suggest any one to join Mc Master University. I only give my personal opinion and share my experience. I am just a student of CCRA program at this university. McMaster University need not advertise for students. It is one of the standard Universities in Canada.

Hello everyone,

My background so far has been in academic research, but I would like to make a career switch into clin research, especially interested in CRO's and outsourcing? Are there programs or training courses in US where I can learn about clin research with good chance of acquiring a job with CRO such as Quintiles, Parexel, PPD etc?? What is Kriger?

Hi Kelly
I am intrested in doing the clinical research programe in Humber as well, did you take up full time or part time and is it possible to get a job half way thru if you are doing part time?
Thank you

As I know, in Toronto & Montreal HUNDREDS of CRAs are looking for a job. Vancouver & Edmonton (Alberta) are better places, much more opened positions, they grow up in clin res field very dramatically over the past few years.

If you are a Pharma graduate a course in CRA is not required. In US I believe there are CRO organisation which offer a training program and paid internship. There was one CRO company from NJ which gave info about this training. Go back and read the thread a few weeks ago.

Hi Sumit,
NJ is a good for CRA's,as there are lot of Pharma/CRO. The key is apply apply and apply!! Yes, apply and speak with recruiters/agencies often, call them and speak what are the requirements, how is the market etc. Take short term contract positions to begin with...some entry level positions are good to enter in the market.Once you are in the industry, you will get more contacts, better opportunities.
I started with one month contract,2 yrs ago...and I am doing pretty good now.
Also, if you are in a position to relocate, you can move near Philly(There are lots of Pharma/CRO in College Ville,Ambler,Malvern,Upper Gweyned,Bluebell, etc). Lots of job openings every day.
Good luck!

Hi Asmi,

Thanks for replying. I have a quick question. Do they consider pharmaceutical degree in clinical field or they will ask for any special course on clinical trails.

- Was this comment helpful? Yes / No Reply - Report abuse

Sumit,
Any life science bachelor degree is good.Courses in clinical trail help...as you get all the basic info. I will recommend the one with Kriger. Or try your luck in PPD--they are the best trainers..Its a CRO...but they train the employees extensively(charge nothing). Don't stop trying until you get it.
Just wondering why don't you try other positions in Pharma Comapnies?I am sure you will find something good soon.
Target to apply for at laest 10 positions every day.

Cheers!

AnaS in Mississauga, Ontario said: Hi Sam,

I was looking to get my license as pharmacist in Canada, but I found this process too expensive and too long ( about $ 16,000 and 3 years). I found the Clinical Research program at Humber College, I passed the assay and the interview for it. In december 2007 I graduate from program and I try to find a job.I had 3 interviews at different companies and I didn't get a offer because of lack of experience ( at least 2 years in the field), noone cares of your academic experience and knowledge. 2 months ago I evaluated my degree at U of T (they recognized my MD in Sciences of Pharmacy). After 2 months of hard work I got a grant from Government of Canada (Thank them)and on June 23 I will start a full-time training at Academy of Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences in Toronto in the Quality Control diploma program. This program is offered just for 5 years and many employers recognize it as a good one.

I have a question regarding your experience with Humber college. I am doing the full time course there this fall and now I am really worried as to whether its good or not. Most of the people said it was good but how can I get experience when I just graduate. did you do the part-time course or the full-time one? If it was the full-time one then did the internship not help you at all? I am worried that I will do this course and then not get a job and basically will be set back again. please let me know what you think. thanks

Hi tamara
Have you taken the program at Humber? I am starting the full-time one in the fall and I was wondering what you thought of it. I am taking it mainly for the internship opportunity. I have been reading all the comments on the forum and now am really worried about how I am gonna break into the industry without experience, but I was thinking that the co-op should be able to help. Anyway let me know what you think about employment opportunities after graduating from HUmber and the program itself?

Hi Lisa,
Yes, I’m a graduate from Humber.
I was actually looking for a possibility of getting a higher education in the clinical research field in Canada, like MSc or PhD, and have found none.
The highest is in Humber, because it’s a POSTgraduate program.
The program is very good, and I know that they are improving constantly.
A lot of CROs and pharm companies, who after having experience working with our grads, are happy to hire them, sometimes even skipping the internship.

Humber is a best program in clinical research but the program is run by a program coodinator who herself has no experience with in canadian clinical research and she is prejudices and above all all internship resume go through her (offen student dont know weather there resume is screen out by her for unknown reason) and student get interview call or selection(she can switch among student job offer by saying to employer that the selected studeny has already accepted offer some where else so the employer can select the 2 or the 3 choice) all through her, so she display her prejudices game at that time, and then the student who suffer realize her mentality.

None of this is a true, it seems like you don't know what you are talking about.
If you didn't get an internship, I would suggest you first look within your weaknesses, whether it is your resume or whatever else, before blaming someone else. The responsibility of finding internships for students is placed with a person who is in charge of it, and nobody else.

You could apply for Research/ Assistant/ Technician/ Technologist in any research laboratory in University of Toronto, York etc and get trained in Molecular Biology and then move on. There are also many positions available in many hospitals in Research Section. The posts are not necessarly adverstised. So you need to meet the PI/Professor in person and then talk to them with your resume

Hello everyone,
Knowing that most of the people in this forum are related CR in Canada, I would be grateful to anyone who can provide me with reviews about the Clinical Research International based in Ontario. Actually am doing a course in India on clinical research and the course is certified by Clinical Research International.
