leanne in Manchester, United Kingdom said: Hay i have read all your comments they are very intresting.
I wonder if any of you could help me ,i am curently working as a nursing assistant in a hospital in manchester england a nursung assistant is just the same as a cna but we dont reconize it as a qualification.
I would really like to do the same job as i am doing now in california but i am unsure how.could any one help me .

Hi Leanne, I know it has been a while since you posted this email unfortunately I just got into it, my suggestion is for you to send application to the Ca. BVNPT, you do not have to have a current CNA Certification or you do not have to be a CNA to qualify for the CNA TO LVN Bridge opportunity as long as a charge nurse can sign your employment verification form that you did such paid nursing work. Anyway I hope you are on your way to achieving your goals. Good luck you may email me to ihgmethod3_equivalency@yahoo.com

sondra in Simi Valley, California said: I am in the same position as some of the other people on this board. I am stuck in a high stress CNA position in med/surg. I am an EMT, CNA, Phlebotomist and have had 21 years with Outdoor Emergency Care. I have a B.F.A in Fine Arts and a Masters in Education. Challenging the boards is na option for me, I know I won't want to stay that long as a CNA however with all the years of my other expereince as I am 50 and it is taking its toll on me. I am workign 12 hour shifts which is fine but I literally run the entire time to teh point of exhaustion for very little pay. I haven't been able to find a phlebotomy job yet but am looking still. I need to make more money to save my home so I am keeping this job until I can transfer into something better. I have spent so much money and time in school woth a 28,000 student loan to pay back now I am not sure what is the best way to move ahead. I am very driven but find the nurses very debilatating and that is turning me off to nursing.

I can clearly feel the frustrations you have, there is only one thing I would like to tell you, "Do not allow any kind of situation or whoever intimidate you with your goals in life, call me or email me and I will do my best in my own little way to help you.

Hi everyone! I have been working as a medical assistant for 7 years, I currently work for Kaiser where I float around to 11 departments

(dermatology, opthalmology, allergy, surgery, podiatry, orthopedics, adult medicine, head &neck, EKG,endocrinology, pediatrics)

My question is would this be enough experience to challenge for the LVN boards it states you need experience in a clinical facility.

I can take the pharmacology course, but I dont have extra time or money to do so if I would be denied the opportunity to take the test.please help!!! HAVE ANY MEDICAL ASSISTANTS CHALLENGED THE BOARDS???

Janell91, from what I know, challenging LVN you need to be at least 10 years working as CNA. have taken all pharma classes, have experience direct patient care in hospitals, specially pediatrics. I don't know about Medical assistant ?

Visit the boards website go over the Method3 information if you think you have what the board requires if I were you why not send an application to the board let them evaluate your experiences, that is if you are willing to spend $75.00 processing fee and for the Live Scan Finger Print. Do not be asking anyone, well yeah you could but every applicants situation and experience is different, go ahead what is $200.00 so you will know where you stand.

is 0nly the board of nursing who can evaluate your work experience and education
one things i known for my situation as CNA, the board give you 5credits for your CNA certification, 1 credit for every 160 hours in work nursing experience,1 credit for 30 hours nursing education and if you don't have the pediatric and maternity work experience you can take that course to any accredited nursing school approved by the state board of any state in USA, but the school have to send them your transcript for that courses (pediatric, maternity, pharmacology). If you have any question about your case they can answer only if you have a file with them, they are very nice.

I am a working CNA, EMT and have 21 years of trauma experience on Ski Patrol. A bit different than just long years as a CNA but I have now worked in both our Med/Surg department where I am based, telemmetry, ICU and the transitional care facility of my hospital. I want to challenge the LVN and take the test. After researching all the various school, costs etc. I come right back to this. I was told however, to be careful what pharmacology class we sign up for as some are not accepted as being comparable. I looked at soem fot he test questions as some I know I need to study more information to pass. Are there any good study classes or study guides you can recommend for us to buy and get started with?

I eventually had to drop it after 2 days and was not even refunded any of my money. All am trying to make sure is that no one goes through what i went through.

My advice is that do some other research like the better business beaureal before u go with whaat people post on the web. I haven't posted in a while but I wanted to respond aware i'm risking sounding like i'm advertising :)
Lots of providers are on the VN website and unfortunately I know I've had students that had a similar experience that have to repeat the pharm course after having to drop out/ not have the class count-- my website is MedEdprn.org I've been offering the pharm class for a very long time and it WILL be accepted, the cost is $500 (+$25 S&H) that cost already includes the book (that is it--no other cost, honest). If you call me (and remind me) I will give you a discount on the class--this is something i've only done a handful of times but I feel bad about your situation and just wanted to make you that offer. Don't get discouraged find a way to get to where you want to be, good luck!

Method 3: Qualification Based on Equivalent Education and/or Experience
Experience Required:
Pursuant to the California Code of Regulations section 2516(b), the 51 months of paid general duty inpatient bedside nursing experience must include a minimum of each of the following:
48 months medical/surgical nursing
6 weeks maternity or genitourinary nursing
6 weeks pediatric nursing

In addition to the required paid bedside nursing experience, the applicant must also have completed a pharmacology course of at least 54 theory hours

Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians
2535 Capitol Oaks Drive
Suite 205
Sacramento, CA 95833
Email: bvnpt@dca.ca.gov
www.bvnpt.ca.gov/licensing/method_3.shtml
We can't post phone numbers for the board or any other but you will find some links at my website you might find helpful:
mededprn.org (pharmacology course provider)

The board is the ONLY one that can 'qualify you' there are many of us that are pharmacology class providers and can offer suggestions/advice but if I were you I would want to talk to people that actually APPROVE the application (the Board) and THEN call pharmacology providers since WE really cannot be unbiased since we would love to have you sign up for our class,
just a thought...

Yes. CNA is not required-- bedside nursing experience is (48months) I personally know of many MA's that have successfuly challenged. The majority are CNA's because the required experience usually is provided by nursing assistants but it is not required by the board, hope this helps

I have heard of a couple of schools but to be honest none that anyone has raved about so I hesitate to recommend any (trust me, I get asked all the time by my students)
I think the real question is: Do you REALLY need a school to review the NCLEX?
At one point I was going to offer a course but I couldn't justify encouraging someone to pay so much money for something you could do on your own with the help of Barnes and Nobles/ Borders and enough self determination...

You dropped because Tylenol was called Panadol?? When you say user friendly what do you mean? I have always thought that if you don't want to interact with instructors (professors) face to faces then opt for online classes, I do not recall that class having a professor, it was self study and with final test online. Anyhow, sorry for you bad experience but I felt you have gone overboard not to recommend it to anybody, I went through them and they were very helpful and since then I have been sending my friends to them and they seems happy.

Hi Guys,
I've been wathcing this site for a few weeks and have come up with a solution to my schooling dilemma. California Preparatory School is offering a 54 hour legitimate pharmacology class on Saturdays only from 8-2pm for 9 weeks. It costs about $500 and has several lcoations. If you take the second course which is a prep class for the NCLEX it will cost about $1,000 for both but this prepares you for every aspect of the test. I have been cleared from my boss to take it and am exciting about finding a reasonable option that will work for my next growth spurt onto LVN!!If you need any info my home email screed2ski@yahoo.com.

Hello, I was wondering if you knew of an alternate program that takes experianced medical assistants to LVN's? I went on the www.bvnpt.ca.gov/pdf/method3.pdf website however I know I need additional training, I'm not ready to take this test yet. Can anyone that's an LVN that was a CNA/ OR MA that went through a bridge program advise me on what school they went to, costs and duration of the courses-that kind of thing? Thank you!

anna c in Sacramento, California said: Hi,
i'm glad that more CNA's are opting to challenge the LVN board--- this is an excellent way to save time and money and getting credit for your experience. CNA's should check the LVN website for more information regarding this option. Even if you don't live in California you may find it to be an advantage www.bvnpt.ca.gov/method3.htm
not only would you get an LVN after your name but many schools will give you credit and you could finish the RN twice as fast in some cases.
Here's another option for the pharmacology course is www.mededprn.tripod.com
Hope this helps,
Good Luck!
