You can learn a lot from books or studying on-line, but you will never completely learn machining without hands-on training. Metalworking is as much a craft as a science. It is a profession that dates back to the bronze age, and even earlier. A good machinist uses his mind, but also his five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and yes, even taste at times) and also a lot of gut instinct. If you've been machining every day for 40 years, you still have more to learn. It can be a very rewarding profession. Good Luck.
